Fishing Report December 3, 2012 Townsend, Tennessee

It was warm this weekend with highs in the 60’s.  The high today should be 70 degrees. The water temperature in Little River is warming quickly and fly fishing for trout has improved.  However, November was an extremely dry month and water levels in the Smoky Mountain streams are low.  We expect rain Tuesday night. We are hoping for higher water. Right now, nymphs are working.  Try a Prince, Tellico, Hare’s Ear or a Pheasant Tail.  The dry fly I would pick is a Blue Wing Olive.  All of these flies will produce well in December if the water conditions are good.  If the warm conditions continue, we expect better fishing through mid-December.

Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers has been slow due to the low cool water.  Those fisheries may have improved this weekend. Warm temperatures and more flow will help. Streamers would be our choice, probably a black or olive Wooly Bugger. READ OUR DAILY FISHING REPORT BY CLICKING HERE.

Dette Coffin Fly tied by Steve Yates

The Dette Coffin Fly - By Steve Yates

The Green Drake (Ephemera Guttulata) is probably the most talked about and anticipated mayfly hatch of the year. Vacation times are often scheduled during the anticipated appearance of this large mayfly. Anglers often dream of catching the “big one” on a dry fly during this time. Because of its large size this fly often entices large trout to feed on the surface. READ MORE AND LEARN TO TIE BY CLICKING HERE.

Foam Body Popper
Making your own bass and bluegill poppers is easy.  You don’t have to be a fly tyer.  You just need a couple of basic skills to make them.  I wrote this article years ago but people still ask for copies.  So, I’m making it available to you again.  Give this a try.  It’s a lot of fun, the poppers are durable and they catch fish.
