Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina
Welcome to the Fishing Report. Thick gray clouds hang over Townsend this morning. It is one of those mornings that makes it hard to really wake up and get going. Thank God for the coffee bean.
Water levels are looking good. This morning the gauge read 2.54 feet or 397 c.f.s. This is just a little above the normal flow of 346 c.f.s. The streams are running clear. Checking the weather forecast, highs are going to be in the low 50's for the rest of the week. Lows are only supposed to be in the mid 30's. Water temps should continue to rise as the week continues.
If you head out fishing nymphs are going to be a good place to start. BH Prince, BH Pheasant Tail, BH Tellico, Copper John, etc in sizes #12-#16 should produce well. You will likely need some split shot to get them down faster. Later in the afternoon when the water has had a chance to warm some you might find some trout willing to take a dry. BWO would be my first choice. Something small in the #16-#20 range.
New 2013 fishing licenses should be available starting February 18th. Your current license is still valid until the 28th of February. Just giving the list a quick glance over it doesn't look like prices changed any.
It has been quiet here at the Shop. It always is during the week this time of year. We are staying busy though. There is alot of stuff to get done. New signs, price changes, getting organized for the Spring. I've got hope that this is going to be a good year.
John Thurman and Tim Doyle are going to be here on Saturday for another Free Fly Tying Demo. They will be tying from 10 am till 2 pm. Stop by and check them out.
If you get the chance to hit the rivers today have fun and be safe. The water is warmer...but still cold enough you don't want to take an accidental swim. Thank you for reading the fishing report and thank you for being here with us.
