Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is bright and sunny this morning, but cold. Today's high is only supposed to be in the mid-40's. This weekend is going to be a little warmer but nights are going to be hovering around freezing. Overnight temperatures are really what effects the water temperatures the most. If it stays warm at night then the streams maintain the warmth they gained during the day. When it drops down to freezing or below, the streams lose heat quickly.

The conditions on the Little River are not ideal for fishing today. Water levels are still high at 3.07 feet or 928 c.f.s. This is a lot higher than the daily normal of 385 c.f.s. Water temperatures are also a chilly 42.44 F. The more important factor on the water temp is that it has been on a cooling trend for the last two days. The trout don't seem to like cooling water in the winter. Maybe the sun will get on the water and warm it up today.

Fishing in the Smokies will be tough today. Water levels are high and temps are cold. If you go I would try one of the smaller, low elevation streams like West Prong of Little River or maybe even Anthony Creek. You can try along the Little River looking for sunny stretches of water but I would stay out of the water as much as possible. 3 feet on the stream gauge is kayaking flows.

Nymphs with plenty of weight will be the best bet. Get your flies down. When water temps are cold the trout are less likely to mover to far to eat your fly.

We have some great fly tyers here at the Shop tomorrow from 10 am till 2 pm. Mike Adams and Rocky Cox will be here. Both of them are guides which means they are full of quality information and stories. Oh, they tie great flies also.

Mike Adams does most of his guiding and fishing in upper East Tennessee. Rocky Cox guides on area tailwaters but most especially the Cumberland River. Make a trip up to Townsend tomorrow and come see these guys. It will be a fun time.

Byron is off for the week so I will be filling in writing the Fishing Report. I'm going to try to get it posted by 10am. I can't do 5am like Byron does.

Oh....almost forgot. Chota just received a large shipment of boots so the STL+ boots are no longer on backorder and the brand new STL Light and Hybrid Shoes are available too. We haven't gotten a stock of all the sizes yet but if you call ahead we can make sure we get some in for you.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
