Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a much quieter morning than yesterday. Yesterday we had an Advanced Fly Tying Class and some Free fly tying demonstrations. Sundays are quiet in the morning. It is going to be a beautiful day to be out in the mountains.

Fishing on the other hand probably won't be that great today. Water levels are in better shape at 2.51 feet or 519 c.f.s. which is still a bit higher than the daily normal of 338 c.f.s. Water temperatures however have been on a cooling trend for several days. Cooling temps are not a good thing this time of year. I don't see that improving much over the next week. Daytime highs are only supposed to be in the high 30's and low 40's and over night temps will be near freezing or below. Maybe we just need to get this stretch of cold weather out of the way before spring hatches can start.

If you head to the Smokies today to fish I would stay in the low elevations and fish spot with the sun on the water. You are going to need nymphs and plenty of weight. Fish them low and slow. Don't expect any 50 fish days this week.

Some people like to go to Abrams Creek in the winter. The water near the trailhead is a little warmer than other streams due to the springs which feed it. I definitely wouldn't be hiking far down the trail. As easy as it is to slip and fall into Abrams I don't want to be too far from my car and some warm dry clothes. Another thing to consider is how many people are going to have the same idea. After you make the drive around the Loop are you going to find several other anglers wanting to fish the same water?

Looking at the TVA site for the tailwaters it looks like most are running water today. That takes that option off the table also. We all might just have to take this opportunity to plan warmer weather adventures and get ready for spring.

Slow days at the Shop give us time to work on the new online catalog. I wish I could post a link and show it off but it is still pretty far from being done. It is going to be great. Mobile friendly and much more complete. Soon.......

The new software we are using for it is easier to work with than our old catalog but there are so many items. We are still learning how to use the software also. I learned something yesterday about color and size options that would have saved us quite a bit of time but all that work is done now.

2016 Fishing Licenses will be available soon. About 2 more weeks and TWRA will update the terminals and switch over to the new year. License costs went up last July so if you purchased your license before then expect an increase this year.

I would really like to hear feed back from everyone of things that we can do better here at the Shop. We have plans for stuff but it is always good to know what you all are thinking. You are the reason we can do any of this. Just give an email to me at info@littleriveroutfitters.com. Thanks in advance.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
