Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is another cold morning here in Townsend. The weather forecast is calling for temperatures to get into the low 40's. This isn't going to do much to help water temps especially when we drop below freezing again tonite.

Water levels are good a 2.05 feet or 295 c.f.s. This is just above the daily normal of 282 c.f.s. Water temperatures are maintaining at around 35F.

Little River Road, Tremont Road and Cades Cove Loop Road are all open this morning. It is always important to watch for ice on the roads. The Wear Cove Entrance Road is still listed as closed at 10 am this morning. That closure is one that can be really frustrating. You drive all the way into Wears Valley, then up the hill only to find the gate locked at the top.

Fishing is going to be slow today and tomorrow and probably even slower on Saturday. You will need to fish nymphs sunk deep and fished slow. I would try a double nymph rig with plenty of split shot to get it down. For my nymphs I would have a large one like a Pat's Rubberleg or Prince nymph and then trail a pheasant tail or Copper John behind. A Squirmy Wormy would be a good one also.

Saturday is going to be very cold. It is a perfect time to drive to Townsend and learn about warmwater fishing and fly tying. Our FREE Fly Tying Demo this weekend will be David Perry and Gary Troutman. David is from Middle Tennessee and has been doing some musky fishing. I know at least one of the muskies that Dan Munger has caught was in David's boat. Gary Troutman (despite his name) loves to catch smallmouth bass and other warmwater species. This is going to be a fun and informative way to spend a chilly Saturday. Come out to the Shop from 10 till 2 this Saturday.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
