Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:23 am, the temperature outside is 38.3 degrees.
It will be warm today, near 60 degrees. There is a chance for rain this afternoon. Tonight’s low temperature will be in the mid 40’s. Highs through Wednesday will be in the high 60’s to low 70’s with lows in the mid to high 40’s.
The extended forecast through March 4th, calls for warm temperatures each day with a couple of cool days thrown in. For the most part, expect much higher than normal temperatures.
Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.05 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 341 cfs. The water temperature is 43.2 degrees this morning. Yesterday’s high water temperature reached or exceeded 44 degrees.
Water temperatures will rise today. To what point, I don’t know. Tonight will be warm and tomorrow will be very warm. Monday through Friday will be extremely warm. The warmer the water gets, this time of year, the better the fishing will be.
We are looking for water temperatures to reach or exceed 50 degrees for high trout activity. Sustained water temperatures above 50 degrees, will trigger more aquatic insect activity. When that happens, you will see adult Quill Gordons, Blue Quills, Blue Wing Olives and other adult insects on the water. That is what we are waiting for.
Fishing should be fair to good today in the lower elevations. Fishing will improve tomorrow and get even better Monday.
If the longer term weather forecast does not change from what we are seeing now, Spring trout fishing in the Smokies will begin and will last through early March. Fishing will get better every day.
A shipment of early Spring flies arrived at the shop this week. Another shipment was expected to arrive yesterday.
