Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:36 am, the temperature outside is 48.6 degrees.
It will be warm today, in the mid 60’s with a low tonight in the low 40’s. It may rain this morning. Temperatures will climb into the high 60’s to low 70’s through Friday.
Little River is flowing at 212 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.02 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 328 cfs. The water temperature is 46.2 degrees this morning.
Water temperatures will continue to rise this week. When they reach 50 degrees, fishing will be good. It is probably fairly good right now. Fishing will be even better when the water temperatures exceed 50 degrees, and are sustained above that number.
Keep in mind, when you see the water temperature at the Little River Gauge, that is a low elevation location. The water will be colder in the higher elevations.
We will probably see spring aquatic insect hatches this week. Be prepared with Quill Gordon, Blue Quill and Blue Wing Olive dry flies. If trout are not feeding on the surface, use nymphs or wet flies. These early hatches will likely be sporadic and short lived.
The long term weather forecast still predicts Spring-like temperatures through early March.
Brookfield Smoky Mountain Hydropower announced Chilhowee reservoir may be re-filled and open to the public by June. The lake was drained to the river (40 feet below full pool) and closed to the public in 2015, due to seepage at the dam. Repairs are being made now. Weather delays could postpone the opening to a later date. You can read the article in the Daily Times by CLICKING HERE.
I am excited to hear this. Fishing may be slow for a while, but it will be nice to have the lake back again.
I have not been feeling well this weekend so I’m going to cut the report short this morning. I hope you can get out and enjoy this beautiful day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
