Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:57 am, the temperature is 56.5 degrees. During the night, I heard heavy rain for short time. It is not raining now. We have a slight chance for rain today and the high temperature will be over 60 degrees. The good fishing continues.

It will be warm, in the 60’s during the day, through Wednesday. Then, it will be colder Thursday and Friday. Warm air returns this weekend. During the period beginning Sunday February 28th through March 7, expect warm days in the 50’s and 60’s with cool nights.

Little River is flowing at 598 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.64 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 366 cfs. The water temperature is exactly 50 degrees this morning.

2.64 feet is a little high. The water will be swift in some spots. You may find stained water this morning in some watersheds. I don’t know for sure, but we did have a heavy shower last night.

Fishing has been very good the past two days. Fishermen were catching plenty of trout on nymphs and at times, Quill Gordons, Blue Wing Olives and Blue Quills were on the water, making for some good dry fly fishing. The hatches were sporadic. You had to be at the right place at the right time. Most people probably caught their trout on nymphs.

Flows were great this weekend. The water temperature reached near 50 degrees, where it is now. We do have a chance for rain through Wednesday, then a chance for snow on Thursday. I think the water levels will be OK through Wednesday, but I can’t be sure. The chance for rain is low today and tomorrow. The chance is high Wednesday. We may see thunderstorms Wednesday.

I saw a report on the Weather Channel website this morning. The report indicates warmer than normal temperatures in the northern states and the mid-South from March through May. The states to our south are expected to be cooler than normal, if this report is correct. We are expected to have an early Spring in Tennessee.

That is good news for Southern Appalachian fly fishermen. The same holds true for Southern Appalachian fly shops. Our business is up about 75% for the first three weeks of February, compared to 2015. Last year was awful, due to snow and ice storms. We are also up from the same period in 2014.

It sure feels good writing a fishing report, when the fishing is good. It is especially nice, considering the future weather forecast.

We are also starting this year with above average precipitation. Hopefully that will continue.

If you can, go fishing in the mountains today and tomorrow. I think you will enjoy comfortable temperatures and eager trout.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
