Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee. There is not a cloud in the sky and it is 26 degrees this morning. Almost every horizontal surface is coated with frost. Traffic was fairly heavy, I saw maybe 20 cars on my way to work. I noticed the ginseng dealer is in town. The truck was parked in it’s usual place. Janice and Steve beat me to work. They are remodeling Miss Lily’s Restaurant. Steve is a builder. I think he is doing most of the work himself. I’m sure Janice is pitching in too.
The water temperature at the swinging bridge was a chilly 42 degrees. The flow gauge is working again. I heard back from Terry at the USGS. He said the website had the problem, not the gauge transmitting equipment. Flow is 397 cubic feet per second. Median flow for this date is 400 cfs. That’s pretty close to normal.
I saw an odd reading on the gauge data the last day of February. The median flow was very different from what is normal at the end of February. The data dates back 47 years. But on that day, the data was based on 12 years of data. Why? It was February 29th. It was leap day. Data for February 29th is only counted once every four years.
Fishing is going to get good this week! Every day the high temperature will be in the 60’s. After tonight, the lows will be in the 40’s to 50’s. The water temperature will warm back up to the low 50’s in a few days. Get ready. The trout and aquatic insects are going to be active. Prepare for Quill Gordons, Caddis, Blue Quills and Stoneflies. Get ready for some dry fly fishing.
Fishing today may be slow. The water is cold. I am guessing, the water temperature will rise to the mid 40’s then start the day tomorrow around 44 to 45. Then the temperature will start climbing.
I took off yesterday and that was a big mistake. I should have taken off Thursday. I did not plan to take Thursday off because we have a planning commission meeting scheduled. Well guess what? The planning commission meeting was cancelled at the last minute again. The high temperature will be 69 degrees and it will be cloudy on Thursday. I should be on the lake fishing. I am all about public service and I do more than my share. I’m over this public service job. Whew, I feel better already.
The smallmouth bass fishing should be picking up by the end of the week. Look at the extended forecast for the next week. Wow! We may see some spawning action in the lakes very soon.
If you can, get out and enjoy this beautiful day. Don’t forget to vote if you have an election in your State. We may have a tight Property Assessor race going on here. Other than the primary I don’t know of anything else to vote on. Voting is easy here. It takes about ten minutes. We vote at the Townsend School and there are always lots of friendly volunteers moving us through. I don’t recall ever seeing more than ten people there at once to vote. I guess that is another notable advantage to living in a small town.
Have a great day and thank you for being her with us.
