Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report.  It was partly sunny, then cloudy, foggy, then the fog started to lift and now it is cloudy and foggy again all in about an hour this morning.  The sun will prevail.  Traffic is light in Townsend this morning.  The forest is gaining more color every day.  Though it has been cool, fishing is good, people are visiting the Smokies and our town has been busy on weekends.  Daniel said our fishing license sales for March are up $2,000 from last year.  I looked back at fishing reports a year ago.  We had some high water then. I bet more people are fishing here in the Smokies because the generation schedules on the tailwaters have not been angler friendly hardly at all this Spring.

Little River looks fine.  The flow is currently 291 cubic feet per second which is right at normal for this date.  The water temperature is 47 degrees.  Fishing is very good.  Hatches are plentiful and varied.  Trout are feeding on dry flies and most people are happy.  Dark gray dry flies will probably work best for you though most of the time the trout will not be picky about color.  Through the weekend there were a lot of Quill Gordons and Blue Quills hatching.  It sounds like some March Browns are coming off too.  Caddis are on the water.  The conditions are good and they will get better when the water warms up some.

Rain will arrive tonight.  There will be more tomorrow and Thursday, maybe even on Friday.  The chance for rain diminishes into the weekend.  Warmer temperatures will come next week.  Fishing will pick up then here in the Smokies and on the lakes.

The Park Service is going to dedicate the new Oconaluftee Visitor Center on April 15th.  The new facility cost $3 million.  Also, the Clingmans Dome Road is going to open tomorrow morning, two days earlier than normal.  You can read the story in the Daily times by CLICKING HERE.

The Mayor and I are meeting with the Tennessee Department of Transportation on Friday to present our new City plan to settle our right-of-way dispute.  The Deputy Commissioner of Transportation is flying in from Nashville to join our TDOT Regional Director in the meeting.  I guess the four of us will hash this out.  I’m the TDOT Liaison for the City, appointed to work on this problem.  This has taken 8 months.  As of Saturday, my position will be terminated.  I am glad this will be over for me.  It has taken a lot of time and much of that time was unplanned.

I’m also meeting with TDOT and a small group of business people on Tuesday.  We have a bottleneck at the entrance to the Park caused by a new bridge that is under construction.  We’ll also have the Park Service involved.  We intend to show how much traffic flows through the entrance and work on a plan to improve this situation.  The Park Service has those numbers.  Right now, there is a one-lane road entering and exiting the Park at our entrance.  The other lane is closed off.  The traffic is controlled by traffic lights.  I think this is going to be a problem during the Summer season.  A lot of other people agree.  I hope we can find a better solution.  I have found the people at TDOT to be good to work with.  Maybe we can work something out, at least on weekends.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
