Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
April 9, 2010

Welcome to the Fishing Report.  It is sunny and 42 degrees in Townsend this morning.  It rained all day yesterday so the landscape is green and lush.  I was in my turkey blind at daybreak.  The forest woke up right before me.  I could hear every kind of bird you can think of but not a turkey.  I see turkeys every morning except those two days that I have decided to hunt this past week. At 8:00 am the bells at Tuckaleechee Methodist Church rang, just like every morning.  The wildlife seemed to respond to the sound of the bells.  I thought that was interesting.  I moved my blind from the forest and creek on the back of our property to a small field near our house.  Our neighbor was walking her dog, looked down at the field where I was sitting, saw my motionless turkey decoy and just stared at it.  I think I’ll move the blind back down at the creek where there are not any people.

Little River is rolling.  The flow right now is 587 cubic feet per second (cfs).  Last night the river peaked at around 1,200 cfs and median flow for this date is 329 cfs.  The river is dropping fast though.  The water temperature dropped too.  It is 51 degrees in town.

Fishing might be tough today unless you are used to fishing higher water.  I would consider using a streamer or large nymph and fishing deep.  I would stay close to the bank and chunk from there.  Wading in the streams in the fast current could sweep you away.  I would also consider fishing smaller streams.  Laurel Creek on the left going toward Cades Cove or Anthony Creek in and above the Cades Cove Picnic Area would be good choices.  I don’t know what it’s like in the high elevations, probably swift and cold.  By the way, we are expecting a low tonight of 36 degrees in the valley and colder than that in the mountains.  The weekend will be much warmer and the water will be lower.  It will be a beautiful weekend.

I’m at home writing and putting together our e-newsletter, the Little River Journal.  Jim Casada, Steve Yates and I are the contributors.  I need to get some stories from Lefty Kreh again for future issues.  He likes doing it, I just keep forgetting to ask him.

Business has been good at our store.  Reports based on March retail sales from larger retailers were encouraging.  Many retailers are reporting an increase in sales over last year and some were significant. This is an indicator that U.S. citizens are feeling better about the economy.  First quarter earnings will be coming out Monday.  So far, the news looks pretty good. All of the markets are responding favorably today except the Nasdaq which is down 1/10% right now.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
