Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fly Fishing Report.  I’m running late.  I left home at 7:15 but stopped at Troutfest to talk to friends.  I wish I could spend the day up there.  You should go.

Little River is flowing at 198 cubic feet per second (cfs).  Median flow for this date is 232 cfs.  The water temperature is 59.7 degrees.

Fishing is very good.  The trout in the Smokies are taking dry flies all day long and into the evening.  The water is getting lower again.  Many anglers think this is an ideal level.  Personally, I like more water.  Use yellow flies.  They could be Light Cahills, Sulphurs, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Yellow Sally Imitations or a Yellow Parachute Adams.  Yellow is working.

Lower Little River is clear and fishing well.  I talked to Brad Befus and Park Burson this morning.  The two of them and Randy Hamilton floated 7 miles yesterday using River John’s as their canoe livery.  Park showed me a picture of a nice gar that at a Clouser and they actually landed the fish.  Brad is the Sales Manager at Ross Reels which is owned by Scientific Anglers.  Park and Randy work for him as well as St. Croix, Winston, Chota and Scientific Anglers.

The Troutfest Banquet last night was a winner.  We actually had less people than last year.  The total was around 200 people.  But, the auction items were going at high prices.  I’m sure the final numbers will indicate it was a huge success.

Lefty broke a tooth off below the gum and is having oral surgery today in Maryland.  He won’t be here.  Paula talked to him yesterday morning.  But, he is coming back to fish for smallmouth bass with Josh Pfeiffer and Rufus King.  Rufus bought the trip. I was going to buy it but the opening bid cleared by top ceiling by a substantial amount. I think the trip sold for $2,100.  I’m glad Rufus got it.

The Troutfest Expo looks great this morning.  The layout is the best ever.  This is going to be a super event.  Our Chairman, Bill Guinn and the Troutfest Committee did an excellent job putting this together.  We’re all tired but feeling successful.  The weather is going to be about perfect over the weekend.

If you live within a few hours drive from here, get in your truck and come.  You won’t regret it a bit.

I better go.  We open in 5 minutes.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
