Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Welcome to the Fishing Report. It is bright sunny day here in Townsend. Yesterday was a busy day here at the Shop. I would have figured it'd be quiet after TroutFest. This morning was a bit bust also which is why the Fishing Report is a little late in being posted. We had an Onstream Beginner Fly Fishing Class going out this morning. Everyone showed up and got set and now they are learning that casting in the mountains is a bit different that casting on the grass.
Water temperatures have been excellent. They should warm into the low 60's during the day but have been cooling back down over night. It is going to be a warm day out there. Don't forget the sunblock. Looking at the weather forecast it is fairly simple. 30% chance of afternoon thunderstorms and highs in the mid to upper 80's. That is typical of late Spring and Summer fishing. Keep an eye and ear on the weather. Thunderstorms can pop up very quickly and cause issues such as lightning and flash floods. Just because it is sunny where you are doesn't mean that it didn't rain 3 inches upstream. Keep vigilant.
Fishing has been great in the Smokies. There is pleanty of insects hatching of all varieties. Yellow Stoneflies (yellow sallies) have been coming off in the afternoons and evenings. There has been small and large mayflies in light colors especially yellow. Don't forget about the Green Weenies! On the subject of green...if you are fishing in the higher elevation brook trout streams, take a look at the little stoneflies. You'll notice that they are more chartreuse than yellow. Having a few green stoneflies in the box can be an advantage.
Well since this Report is already late I'll keep it short.
Have a great day and good luck fishing out there. Thanks for being here with us.
