Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report.  It is sunny and hot already this morning.  Traffic is heavier than normal in town, it is Memorial Day weekend. Yesterday was a turkey day.  Jack and I went fishing and left the shop at 7:00.  We saw wild turkeys everywhere we drove.  And when I got home last night there were two on the gravel road leading to our house.

Little River is getting low.  Flow this morning is 131 cubic feet per second (cfs).  Median flow for this date is 211 cfs.  And it shows.  There were two guys sitting on the large rocks under the swinging bridge bait fishing.  One of them said he caught a couple of small ones.  I took the water temperature, it was 66 degrees.  I think that’s the highest temperature I’ve taken all year.  I bet the water got warm yesterday.  Thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and tonight with a possibility of rain tomorrow.  I’m hoping it happens.

It appears fishing has slowed down some in the Park.  The moon is nearly full and the water is low.  You should use lighter tippets right now if you are not getting strikes.  I was not at the shop yesterday so I didn’t talk to any anglers.  But I read this report that Daniel wrote yesterday.  Some people are reporting slow fishing and others are not. I would use Yellow Sally Stonefly and Light Cahill patterns for a dry fly.  I might use a beetle or ant pattern.  For a dropper I would use a Green Weenie or Bead Head Pheasant Tail.  Other nymphs would work fine too.

Everyone is talking about the tailwaters in our area.  They have been fishing great.  The lakes are too.  I don’t think I would want to be on the lakes this weekend, or any weekend for that matter.  They are going to be crowded.  I always fish during the week but I hear about the boating traffic on weekends and I want no part of that.

This weekend and especially Monday we honor the men and women who died in the military service.  Memorial Day was once called Decoration Day.  Here, we will see cemeteries decorated.  On Monday thoughts and prayers will go out to our fallen soldiers.

I hope you all have a great holiday.  Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
