Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Welcome to the Fishing Report. I drove to work this morning pulling the boat. It has been parked in our front driveway under the trees, attached to my truck for a week. We planned to go fishing after work several days this week. That isn’t going to happen. I’m sure our boat (The USS Minnow) is as disappointed as I am. She is a vessel that likes to be used. She is happier on the water. We’ll make up for lost time soon.
Daniel is off today. That guy has done an excellent job running the store during my and Paula’s absence. He always does. Our whole staff has taken up the slack for me and Paula and I love them for that and other reasons too. We are family here at LRO, now more than we ever have been. I think there are 12 of us. We all get along. There are not any trouble-makers in our group. Everyone does the best they can. Customers come first. Life is good.
Business is good too. We are up 22.55% in June over last year and we’ve got some marketing stuff coming up that will kick us into higher gear.
I don’t know about the fishing. What a thing to say on a fishing report. I know the water is very low. Flow in Little River is 77 cubic feet per second (cfs). Median flow for this date is 130 cfs. The water temperature this morning is around 72 degrees according to my pure guess. Daniel has been taking the water temperature and since I jut got out of the hospital, I don’t feel like climbing down to the river just yet. It is hot during the day and the lower elevation streams are getting warm too. I do know that. You can find cool water but you may have to drive up higher or hike a little. I would find a nice cool small stream completely covered by canopy and I bet you can catch some trout. Fishing is best early and late. Small dry flies and nymphs should work.
There is heat relief next week. The highs are going to be in the 80’s. We’ll see lows in the low 60’s one night. We do have a chance for afternoon thunderstorms. I’m not holding my breath.
Had I not fell ill I was planning to wait in line for 2 days to get the new i-phone 4. You don’t believe that do you? I am a mac fan. I have a new 27 inch imac at home. This one has a 24 inch monitor. But to sleep on the street all night just to buy a cell phone amazes me. We are we going to get a product for fly fishing that is so hot that you will be willing to wait all night outside our shop to be one of the first to get one? I really don’t think that will happen. You all are smarter than that. Fly fishermen are patient too.
I’ve spent most of the week staring at television trying to understand what’s going on in Afghanistan. Yesterday, I read the article about General McChrystal in Rolling Stone Magazine, “The Runaway General”. I enjoyed it very much.
I feel compelled to side with everyone else to a point, maybe he made some mistakes from a PR standpoint. I guess the question is “Did this article impede General McChrystal’s ability to lead?” And, was he the best choice to lead our troops despite his PR problems? I’m probably the wrong guy to answer that. “Patton” was one of my favorite movies of all time. I love it. I love and support our military. I got two well wishes from a Marine and an Air Force Pilot stationed in that country this week. They are both young and very sharp Majors. Actually the Air Force Major is in the States right now. They are my hero’s. They deserve top-notch leadership on the top level. Maybe they had just that. I’m no expert and maybe I should not be commenting on this. But after reading that article I learned about a very unique soldier who had a tough job and maybe a leadership personality that would serve his combat team in a very positive way. I have not read anything from anyone who agrees with me. So, maybe I’m wrong.
I like General Petraeus too. I don’t think he will make anyone around here mad that’s for sure. I hope he and our military make the Taliban real mad and we kick their butts.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
