Welcome to the Fishing Report. It is warm and sunny. And it is dry. Little River is very low. I checked the flow at all gauges in the Park. Same thing. We need rain. It looks like we will be getting some starting tomorrow and there is a good chance for several days. The water is clear.
Flow in Little River is currently 75 cubic feet per second. Normal is 138 cfs for this date. The trout are going to be spooky. Look for them in the moving choppy water. I would also recommend moving higher to the smaller streams. I would hike above Elkmont for a couple of miles or more. On the Middle Prong of the Little River drive way up on the gravel road. Try Thunderhead Prong. Take 441 to the Chimneys area. You are going to encounter low water but it will be cool up high and the trout will be active.
Fishing will be better early and late. Be on the stream at daybreak. During the day fish the shady areas. Evenings will be good for dry fly action using Yellow Sally stonefly patterns. I would use beetles, ants, yellow jacket and Green Weenies. Trout are used to feeding on terrestrials right now. Try nymphs fished in deep runs. That has been working lately.
Use light tippet and longer leaders. Stay hidden and low. You must get a good drift and don’t cast over a good holding area.
These are all low water tactics. Fishing is good if you are in the right place and use low water fly fishing skills.
Yesterday I finished a two page article for the Little River Journal about making foam poppers. This is something I have wanted to do for a while. After editing there will be about 20 photos and the article is two pages long. The Journal is an e-newsletter that you have to sign up to receive. We send it out around the first of every month. You can sign up below. It is free and worth receiving. Other excellent writers contribute to the Journal.
Today we have a beginner fly fishing class so there will be a lot of activity around here. I’ll be working downstairs and it is early. I won’t have the current rainfall from the Airport because they post that information at around 9:15. I’ll try to update that later in the day.
So, have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
