Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report.  Wild turkeys were roaming around our neighborhood this morning.  Terrestrial insects are plentiful right now and the turkeys love them.  We got a brief shower last night and another one a few minutes ago.  Chances are good for rain over the next few days.  It is going to get cooler too.  Not a lot cooler but better than it has been.

Fishing has been good in the higher elevations.  Some anglers are reporting excellent fishing.  One customer yesterday said he had his best day ever in the Park.  He was using a Yellow Elk Hair Caddis with a Green Weenie dropper.

The key is getting on the stream early and go up high on the West Prong of the Little Pigeon, Walker Camp Prong and the tributaries.  The water is cool there and the trout are active.  You could also hike above Elkmont, way up to the tributaries to the East Prong of the Little River.  The water will probably not be as cool there as it is higher up but in the early mornings the temperature may be OK.

Little River was rushing a little yesterday after the rain that fell in the mountains night before last.  But the flow is back down now, way down.  I had a hard time getting the water temperature this morning.  Finding moving water where I check the river was not an easy task.

The flow is currently 63 cubic feet per second (cfs).  Median flow for this date is 147 cfs.  That should improve over the next few says as afternoon thunderstorms are expected to move into our area each day.

This is a brief report.  I’m scheduled for meetings most of the morning.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
