Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina
Welcome to the Fishing Report. It is foggy and 47 degrees in Townsend this morning. It feels great outside. I have been longing for Fall since July. It’s finally here.
Our streams are flowing lower again but not like we saw in August. Rain is in the forecast starting Friday. Though the chance for rain is low until Sunday, we should have overcast skies and that will be great for the fishing. The chance for rain increases after the weekend.
It will be warmer for a couple of days. We’ll experience highs in the low to mid 80’s until Saturday. Then, cooler temperatures that are more Fall-like will prevail. This will be an excellent weekend to visit the Smoky Mountains and East Tennessee.
Little River is flowing at 57 cubic feet per second (cfs). Median flow for this date is 86 cfs. The water temperature is an incredible 56 degrees this morning.
Fishing is good thanks to the cooler water temperatures. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. Rainbows will be in the riffles and deep runs. Brown trout and brook trout will be out in the open. The browns are chasing each other around, trying to bully their way into prime spawning areas. All trout species are active right now. Rain will improve the conditions and fishing should be excellent soon. It’s pretty darned good right now.
Robert from Orvis was here all afternoon yesterday. Alex from Blackberry Farm joined us. We looked at new gear that will be on the market next year. We talked about business and we discussed fishing, as usual.
One little item I really liked was the new Battenkill Bar stock click and pawl reel. We only saw the photos. Robert said there is only one in the world right now but he saw it. This reel will sell for under $100 and it is machined, I think. Yep, I just looked, it is machined. It will be available in May in black and nickel. The new Helios 2 is beautiful and they cast really well.
The new Silver Sonic waders look great and they are comfortable. There are lots of new Safe Passage packs and chest packs made using the new Orvis digital camo. They look awesome.
Orvis has a new Encounter Wading Jacket that sells for $98. It will be available in February. And you are going to love the Digi Camo Trucker Hat and the Coolever Long Billed Flats Cap.
I just got a call from Brower with Thomas and Thomas. He was supposed to be here at 1:00. His airplane has problems in West Palm so I’ll see him later today.
All of our manufacturers have some cool new gear. You will be seeing some of it this Fall and more in the Spring.
This weekend will mark the 20th year for the Townsend Fall Heritage Festival and Old Timers Day. The event will be held on Friday and Saturday. There will be music, art vendors, Appalachian arts and crafts, baking competitions, and about anything you can imagine. The event will be held at the Visitors Center, Heritage Center, Trillium Cove and the Little River Railroad and Lumber Co. Museum. Believe me, there is something for everyone. I like the “Catch a Greased Pig” and the “Mule Pulling” contests. Paula will have three entries in the baking competition. Last year she won a blue and red ribbon in two categories.
