Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina
Welcome to the Fishing Report from the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a beautiful October morning here in Townsend, cool and clear.
Well, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and ALL the others for that matter, is still closed this morning. US 441 Newfound Gap Road is open to through traffic. You can drive to Cherokee, NC but they have the pull offs barricaded so there is no stopping. All other roads in the Park are closed including Little River Road, Tremont Road and Cades Cove. Visitors aren't even allowed to walk or bike in.
I tried calling the Cherokee National Forest offices yesterday and finally got a voice mail saying that they were on furlough and unable to answer the calls. This morning I called the TWRA and the lady I spoke with there said that the information that they had was that National Forest Campgrounds were closed but roads were still open and hunts and fishing opportunities would continue as normal. Having the National Forest remaining open provides tons of fishing opportunities.
Keep in mind that the main part of Tellico River is closed to fishing on Thursdays and Fridays due to normal stocking. You also need a special Tellico Permit in addition to your TN Fishing license and Trout Stamp. If you fish North River or Bald Rivers you do not need the extra permit and you can fish everyday.
The northern section of the Cherokee National Forest has some excellent fishing opportunities that most people don't think about. I have fished Doe River through Roan Mountain State Park and done well. That whole section of the mountains has many wild and stocked streams. They can be a little harder to locate and a further drive but they can definitely be worth it.
It looks like the only tailwater that isn't generating is the Watauga. Everything else is running water.
The local TV stations and newspapers were interviewing several of the local guide services yesterday. This is really going to effect them hard if the shut down continues for more than a couple of days.
The Shop here looks like a wreck at the moment. That is currently not a bad thing. We are still working hard on moving things around. I know that these changes are going to make for a great new look and set us up for a good year in 2014.
As soon as any new information comes in we'll add it to our Facebook page or on the Fishing Report. And as always feel free to give us a call. 865-448-9459 and we'll try to answer any questions we can.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
