Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. A line of thunderstorms rolled through the area last night with some incredible lightning and a bit of rain. It was one of those storms where the lightning flashed across the sky in long, snaking lines instead of just mercilessly attacking the ground. It didn't seem like it rained hard.

Water levels in the Little River system are up a just a little from yesterday. This morning the gauge is reading 1.86 feet or 212 c.f.s. The average daily flow is 72 c.f.s. This is a great level for fishing. I expect the Middle Prong of Little River at Tremont is off color this morning. That will clear quickly as levels settle out.

Anglers have been doing well in most places. The brook trout in the high elevations are beginning to get their spawning colors. If you have never had or taken the opportunity to catch a Fall brook trout you are missing out. Their colors get even more vibrant than usual. The reds and oranges offset by the bright white of fin edges are incredible. People are asking about the brown trout. It is still early for them. They are getting more active with the cooler shorter days but it will still be several weeks before they get in spawning mode.

Effective fly patterns have been a mixed bag. Many people are using nymph patterns such as Prince Nymphs, Hares Ears, Copper Johns, Green Weenies and Barbie Bugs. Sizes ranging from #12 - #16. Good dries are Parachute Adams, Thunderheads, caddis patterns and Stimulators. Sizes from #14 - #18.

Our first fall shipment of Fishpond arrived yesterday. The Fishpond wall was looking very bare. I ordered some travel items again. We haven't had much of the Fishpond luggage items over the last couple of years. I'm not really sure why not as they always sold through in the past. Looking at the reports this year I decided to give them another try. So in this box is the big 31" Rodeo Rolling Duffel, the Bumpy Road Cargo Duffel and toiletry kits. At some point some very cool Simms luggage is coming also. The new 2016 items from Fishpond still won't ship for a few more weeks.

Project Healing Waters is holding their 2nd annual Smoky Mountain Grand Slam Challenge on Saturday, October 17 on the Clinch River. They have a fund raising banquet with auction of Friday October 16th also. I have included their press release below today's Fishing Report. This is a great event for a great cause.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
