Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains.  At 5:15 am, the temperature is 29.7 degrees.  We are in for some unbelievable warm temperatures over the next 7 days.  Highs will be in the high 50’s to high 60’s.  Lows will be in the 40’s to possibly 50 degrees. It may rain early next week.

Little River is flowing at 184 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.80 feet on the flow gauge.  Median flow for this date is 193 cfs.  The water temperature is 41.7 degrees this morning. Fishing in the Smokies has been slow and it probably will be slow again today though it may improve this afternoon.

We will see the water temperature rise over the next few days.  How high it will go is not something I can predict.  I do think we’ll see much warmer water and better fishing in the mountains over the next 7 days or longer.

If you go today, you will probably do best later today.  Give the water a chance to warm.  I think nymphs will work best but don’t be surprised if dry flies work well too, especially in a day or so. Lets hope the water rises into the 50’s, like it did a week ago. If it does, go fishing.

There may be wading opportunities on the Clinch River this afternoon. TVA plans to cut the water off at Cherokee Dam at noon today too.  I don’t know if that opens possibilities on the Holston River for wade fishing.  Check the TVA website and see if their flows for either the Clinch or Holston work for you.

Dan has been doing well on the lakes.  I haven’t seen him in a few days but he has been sending photos and texts to Daniel.

This has been an unbelievable Fall for fly fishermen in our area.

Townsend and Cades Cove Campground have a lot of visitors here for the Thanksgiving holiday.  I drove to Townsend yesterday and was quite surprised at the traffic I saw. We are going to have some great camping weather this week, and I’m sure people will take advantage of the opportunity. As far as I know, all the developed campgrounds in Townsend are open and probably are not full, so hook it up and come on. Call ahead for a reservation, before coming.

I planned to take tomorrow off.  Thursday is my usual day off.  Daniel said he is taking 3 days off this week so I decided to do the same thing. I’ve got a lot of work that needs to be done so I shouldn’t do this but I am going to anyway.

I’m positive I haven’t done this in 20 years, unless it was a planned fishing vacation.

I will be writing the Fishing Report today, of course and Friday but I’ll be off these three days.  I won’t write a report tomorrow.

You can check the water temperature using the USGS link below.  When the water temperature hits 50 degrees, it’s time to go.

I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving holiday.

Thank you for being here with us.
