Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 7:10 am, the temperature is 44.1 degrees.
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I did. I was off. I didn’t work.
Today will be sunny and warm, with a high temperature near 62 degress. High temperatures through the weekend will be about the same. Lows at night will vary between 30 degrees and 40 degrees. No rain is expected.
It did rain somewhere in the Little River watershed yesterday or last night. The river has risen slightly. Flow is now 28 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.29 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 192 cfs. Average flow for the date is 255 cfs. The water temperature has risen to 47.1 degrees.
Fishing will be better today, due to the warmer water. I would probably use nymphs, though dries may produce. I think nymphs are a better choice. You will need to be sneaky. Don’t let the trout see you. Cast to the broken water and deep runs. You may see brown trout in the open water. They will see you too. Blend in.
Fishing a local tailwater today may be a good option. Check the TVA website and find an appropriate generation schedule for the type of fly fishing you do.
We are under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert, due to smoke from wildfires. A Code Orange affects those who are sensitive to respiratory issues.
The chance for rain next week is promising. At this point, the chance for rain is as follows, according to the National Weather Service: Tuesday – 70%, Wednesday – 80%, Wednesday night – 60%. This is considered to be a strong storm system.
I’m hoping this is a region-wide prediction that actually happens. Looking further out to the long term forecast, more days of predicted rain are expected.
More wildfires have erupted in Tennessee and other states nearby. Another arsonist was captured. East Tennessee had 6 new fires reported yesterday. Arson is suspected in five of those. The Tennessee Division of Forestry reports containment of 80% of the East Miller Cove fire in Walland. That fire has burned 1,459 acres, as of yesterday. Tennessee has 72 fires affecting 26,138 acres.
Arson causes the majority of the fires now burning in our State. 13 of the new fires were due to suspected arson. But, some people are still breaking the law, doing stupid things and causing some of them. Of the 25 new fires, as of yesterday, two were caused by campfires and two more were due to people burning debris, in areas affected by the outdoor burn ban.
Hopefully this problem will be reduced next week, by rain.
Our store is stocked for the holidays. The big order, containing the new 2017 Fishpond gear is supposed to arrive Monday. I’m placing new items on and writing content for the online store. We have had 3 slow weeks at the shop, compared to last year. One reason is due to the low water and smoke. Another reason is, we held Fly Tyers Weekend last year, and were not able to this year because we could not secure the large event center.
Daniel and Dave are planning to bring the event back next year, to our store. They plan to rent heated tents and do it on our grounds, like we did in the beginning. They will do the planning and implementation, and I will take care of the advertising. I still have the Fly Tyers Weekend web pages saved, ready to be updated when they tell me they are ready. I’m looking forward to it. Many people will be anxiously awaiting next November.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
