Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee.  It is overcast with light rain now.  The Parkway Market was full of people this morning.  I saw Frank’s police car there and stopped to talk with him.  We discussed the speed limit.  Some people think it should be lowered.  Some don’t think it should be lowered.  Some believe our town would be better off if it were more pedestrian friendly.  I agree with that.  There are ways to lower the average speed without lowering the speed limit.  Maybe that would be a good compromise.

Little River looks good and the flow is higher than yesterday.  We got a little rain here yesterday.  The gauge at Tremont reported .17 inches.  The airport received more than that.  I bet the mountains saw more rain.  The flow is currently 361 cubic feet per second.  Median flow for this date is 257 cfs.  More rain is on the way.  It is going to be windy and we may get some strong thunderstorms today and tonight.  The weather service mentioned snow early in the morning.

Right now fishing should be good.  Later, after this storm moves in it might be dangerous out there due to high winds.  So, I wouldn’t go.  If you do, be careful.  And, if you do go, nymphs will be a good choice.  You may hook a hungry post spawn brown trout.  Several people have.  Joe lost a trout that he thinks measured around 27”.  He did catch an 18” brown.  Anglers are seeing some nice trout in the Middle Prong of Little River too.  If we don’t get a flood, we will see a lot of small browns in the rivers next year.

You should be here Saturday between 10:00 and 2:00.  Mike Bone will be giving a free fly tying demonstration.  He is one of the more seasoned guides in this area.  His home water is the Clinch River and Holston now but he guided in the Smokies at one point, back when I first met him.  Paula and I have fished with Mike on the Clinch and had a good trip.  He is a great guy and talented fly fisherman.  Like I said, you should be here.  You can see our lineup of Free Fly Tying Demonstrations by visiting our website schedule HERE.  And, you can visit Mike’s WEBSITE HERE.

Business seems to be picking up everywhere.  Travel has been good in our area for a few months.  It appears that holiday shopping is going to be better than last year.  Cars are selling well.  We will be up in November.  If we have a good December we may end the year even with 2009.  If not we’ll be down a little.

Wow, The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning and flood advisory for today.  Yep, I’ll stay inside today.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
