Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains.  At 6:30 am, the temperature is 32.2 degrees. There is no more rain in the forecast through the weekend.  High temperatures will range between the mid 40’s to mid 50’s, with lows in the low 30’s through the period.

Little River is flowing at 3.94 feet or 1,540 cubic feet per second (cfs).  Median flow for this date is 209 cfs. The water temperature is 50.4 degrees this morning.

Fishing and especially wading in the Smoky Mountains is not recommended. During the past 3 days, 4 to 6 inches of rain fell in our County, causing some flooding and very high water in the rivers.

Yesterday, Little River’s flow peaked at 6 feet on the gauge or near 4,000 cfs.

The Cades Cove Loop Road was closed yesterday, caused by high water on the road. You can read the story on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.

As far as I can tell, in our County, there was no damage caused by high water.

High water is causing heavy generation and spilling at dams on the Tennessee River. It appears some secondary dams, are holding water back at this time. You may find some fishing opportunities on those tailwaters today.  Check the TVA website before going. The water may be muddy on some tailwaters.

Some lakes are stained with muddy water and debris.

It is hard to write a fishing report, when fishing is not possible on many waters we are used to fishing right now. Thankfully, the rain is over for a time,  so our rivers will gradually recede, and fishing will become normal again. Rain is in the forecast Monday.

How quickly things change. Fishing was unbelievable in November. Fishing in the Smokies was very good Thanksgiving week. Now in December, our options are limited to almost none for a while.

I am thinking about Spring. It won’t be long. We are preparing for Spring at the shop. Yesterday, I ordered a new Apple iMac, which will arrive early next week. On it will be the newest versions of graphic design software, some of which I will have to learn to use.  This Mac, I use at home, will go to the shop.

Dan and Daniel and I will embark on a new online presence project, a big one. I will work from home and in our photography studio at the shop. Dan will write content, and Daniel will assemble the pages. This project will take up a lot of our time this Winter and continue for who knows how long.

We are all excited about this collaboration. You will see some big improvements in our online marketing presence over the next year.

Before we know it, fishing will go crazy in the Great Smoky Mountains again. We are all looking forward to that.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
