Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a very pretty morning in Townsend. There are some clouds but the sky is mostly blue. Don't get used to it though. Rain is moving in over the next several days. The one forecast I saw is calling for 100% chance on Friday. The weather has been warmer and staying warmer even at night. This has caused the water temperatures to rise and fishing to improve.

Water levels are just a little above normal today. The gauge is giving a flow reading of 2.12 feet or 240 c.f.s. The average for today is 218 c.f.s. With water levels like they are right now it won't take very much rain to make the streams unfishably high. Better get out there while you can. Water temperatures are up to 48F this morning.

If this warming trend continues fishing could be very good next week. People call us all the time and ask how the fishing is going to be in the Winter months. It is hard to give a good answer to that because everything is dependent on the weather. If you are coming in from a distance away you either need to be coming to the Smokies anyway and bring your tackle along just in case conditions are good. Or you have to be flexible enough to watch the weather and make a last minute decision to come. When water temperatures are below 40F, the average angler is wasting their time on the river. One good thing is that it doesn't take much of a temperature increase to get the trout active.

When you hit the streams over the next little while have your nymph box with you. All though the Winter nymphs are going to be the place to start. Prince Nymphs, Tellicos, Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns are all good choices. Don't be afraid to put on a large nymph and maybe a smaller trailing fly.

If you are going to try some dry patterns think darker colors. Blue Wing Olives (BWO) like to hatch in nasty weather. Also try some darker colored Elk Hair Caddis. Smaller sizes... #16-#20.

We have gotten all of the fly tying materials moved upstairs now. I think I've got it organized how it is going to be. Now I'm going through all the items on the wall and making new tags and getting them all in line for ordering. We are expecting the new tying department will be easier to order and for you to shop.

We are having our Free Fly Tying Demo on Satuday. Rob Fightmaster will be here and also a new tyer Tradd. This is completely Free from 10 am till 2 pm. Just stop by and grab a cup of coffee. We are also doing a give away of a $100 Little River Outfitters Gift Card. (all you have to do is come by the Shop to sign up.) If you get the chance to stop by it will be a good time.

Well back to making tags. Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
