Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from the Great Smoky Mountians.  It is overcast and 37 degrees in Townsend this morning. There was almost no traffic on the roads when I drove to work.  I probably saw 3 or 4 vehicles.  It is quiet around here.  The Townsend Christmas Parade was scheduled for this afternoon.  I don’t know if it has been rescheduled due to rain.  This is not going to be a great day for a parade.

Little River looks great but the flow is higher than some people like.  Right now, the flow is 500 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.72 feet on the gauge.  The water temperature is 46 degrees at 7:45 am.  The water is clear.

Fishing is good.  You do need to be careful wading.  The streams are swift.  Nymphs with heavy weight will probably do best for you.  There might be some surface aquatic insect activity.  Blue wing olives like the weather we are having.  If you see trout rising, switch to a dry fly or emerger, and choose a pattern to match what you see on the water.

The post spawn brown trout are active and many have been caught lately.  That is nothing unusual this time of year but some locals say there seem to be more large browns this year compared to other years.  You have a chance to catch a 20” to 30” brown in Little River right now.  It is not easy.  It takes patience and luck.  It takes skill.

We are going to have rain every day through Tuesday.  Rain may be heavy at times.  We could get up to 3” before this front moves through.

We have a beginner fly tying class scheduled for next Saturday, December 14th.  We have openings.  CLICK HERE for more information.  This is an excellent opportunity to get started.  We only have one more beginner class on the schedule before Spring.  That class will be held in early January.

We had a great day at the shop yesterday.  Rob Fightmaster, Tradd Little and I tied flies.  Turnout was light which surprised me.  We are holding free fly tying demonstrations most Saturdays until February.  CLICK HERE for a schedule of events and schools.

We  have been busy at the shop.  The first week of December which ended yesterday was way up from the same week a year ago.  As usual, Gift Cards are the #1 gift seller in December.  Fishpond gear is doing very well.  The 2014 collection is awesome.

Our new fly tying department is hugely popular.  I’m ordering several times a week from different suppliers, trying to keep everything in stock. This time of year we will start having materials shipped 2nd day air to speed things up.  One shipment got stuck in Nashville due to the ice storm.  We hope to get it tomorrow.

Keep an eye on the weather.  These streams may become un-fishable unless we get lucky.  I feel kind of lucky right now.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
