Welcome to the Fishing Report. It is cloudy and very warm in Townsend this morning. We got a little rain last night but it was not measurable. Little River is flowing very strong and the water is clear. The water temperature has risen to 49 degrees as of this morning.
This is a very quiet time in or town. Things will pick up here around Christmas and New Years. Then the visitors will go home and we’ll be a quiet little town again until the Quill Gordon’s start hatching in late February or sometime in March. Then the really great fishing gets underway. I am already yearning for that.
If you want to go fishing in the Smokies, today is your day. This is going to be your best opportunity all week. The fishing may not be great but it’s going to get worse. A cold front is moving in and night temperatures will drop into the 20’s. The water temperature will follow that trend. It is also overcast today, another condition in your favor. I would use big nymphs or streamers and fish between Metcalf Bottoms and Elkmont. Be careful wading. The flow is strong. I would choose a Girdle Bug and a Prince Nymph trailing behind.
While I was hunting this weekend our website visitation exceeded one million for this year. The “One Millionth Customer” clicked onto our site and nothing happened out of the ordinary. That is the first time this has happened. I knew it was coming of course. I look at those numbers every day and post them to the left of this report. We will probably get another 45,000 visitors between now and new years eve, and end the year at 1,050,000. Then we'll start back at zero again January 1st, 2010.
That’s kind of amazing to me. Another interesting component about our business is the mail order side. Without that, we would be dead right now. Business has been really good. Since November 1st through yesterday we are up 30.64% from the same period last year. Right now, except on weekends almost all of our business is mail order. It took years to get here. We’ve been in the mail order business around 14 years and started offering Free Shipping from the beginning way before it became popular.
In the old days we printed and mailed catalogs. We stopped doing that in 2005 when we brought our online catalog to life. Now we can show thousands of items for sale, much more than we could in a printed catalog. We just keep plugging away trying to improve our website. As we improve it, more people visit. As more people visit, our business will grow.
Check out the home page by clicking HERE. That’s new. I worked on that page for almost a day a couple of weeks ago. And, I’ve received more compliments on that change than any so far.
Fly shops are getting more complicated and automated in order to exist. Computers, point if sale systems, websites, e-commerce, bar code scanners and e-mail entered our world only a few years ago. Now we can’t live without them. In business everything is always changing and we are always adapting. That’s why I like it so much. It keeps things interesting.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
