Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, wind is blowing, heavy rain is falling, lightning is striking, and the temperature is 65.3 degrees. And this is Christmas Eve!

Thunderstorms are predicted today. More rain is expected tomorrow, including thunderstorms. It will be warm. Saturday looks better, with only a 10% chance for rain and a high temperature of 78 degrees.

Little River is flowing at 368 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.29 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 277 cfs. The water temperature is 55.9 degrees this morning.

Little River is rising. The forecast indicates heavy rain. I may be wrong but I’m betting, the streams will be blown out today and tomorrow. Right now the radar shows some storms moving to the east and possibly missing us, but that is a snapshot of the next couple of hours. Who knows what is coming later.

The Fishing Gauge for today indicates slow fishing but I hope it turns out to be wrong.

I know one thing for sure, I would not want to be in the Park right now. Limbs fell most of the night during the times we had strong winds. I could see lightning striking toward Cades Cove, before I got up this morning. And, the streams are rising. This is not a good time to be in the Park.

Maybe this won’t turn out so bad, and fishing will be fine tomorrow or Saturday. It’s just hard to say at this point.

Dan Munger and I will open the shop and 9 am and we’ll be there until noon today. Then we are closing for Christmas.  We will be closed tomorrow, Christmas Day.

All of us at Little River Outfitters wish you a Merry Christmas. I want to thank you for the tremendous support you have given us this month and this year. I thank our great staff for working hard and improving our business.

We will all be back Saturday for you, and hopefully, the streams in the Park will be fishable. If they are, fishing will be excellent.

Merry Christmas! Have a great couple of days and thank you for being here with us.

UPDATE 6:38 AM - Little River is rising quickly. Right now, the flow gauge reading is at 3.1 feet or 893 cfs. I believe the river will continue to rise and fishing in the Smoky Mountains will not be a good idea today.
