Welcome to the Fishing Report. It is clear and sunny this morning in Townsend. I’ts cold too, 28 degrees at 8:10 am. And, it is much colder than that in the mountains. The low last night was 1 degree at Newfound Gap and 9 degrees at Mt. Leconte. It is going to be cold all week with snow expected by the weekend, maybe heavy snow.
Little River is running full and fast. The gauge is reading 3 feet which computes to 664 cubic feet per second. Normal flow for this date is 271 cfs. The river looks great though. The water temperature was 42 degrees this morning in town.
I guess some people will be out fishing today. Not many. If you go try big nymphs with extra weight clamped on your tippet. You need to get the fly down. Try streamers too. I hate writing fishing reports this time of year. Some people are catching fish and some nice ones but most are not. Trout can be caught in the cold months and sometimes the fishing for large trout can be excellent. You’ve got to be able to locate them, make a good cast and get the fly down to where they are without spooking them.
The Wall Street Journal reported today that Christmas sales by retailers were up 3.6% over last year. But, you also have to consider the fact that 2008 was one of the worst seasons we’ve experienced. I don’t think anyone in the retail business will forget the Fall of 2008.
Things are better now, our economy is improving in some sectors. We’ve still got a ways to go. What really impresses me is the market recovery. For instance, the Dow has increased 61% since March 9th. The markets were sliding down in 2008 then hit the bottom in March 2009. Then they started the climb back up.
The year is almost over. I’m looking forward to March 2010. That is only two months away. That is when the fishing picks up for me. That’s when I’ll start fishing again. Turkey hunting season comes a month later. I’m looking forward to that. Then we’ll fish all Spring and Summer. Those will be good times. Two more months to go.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
