Dadgummit y'all...talk about jumping the gun! If I'm to qualify this month, it looks like it will have to be just under the wire....due to soccer, school, etc...it looks like we won't be able to make it back up there until the last weekend in April. Pretty fish - I suspect the list will be long this month.

Here is my first entry. Sorry about the picture quality. The wife was with me, and she is not familiar with my camera. Should have taken some pics of last months trout trips, but didn't catch anything picture-worthy.

Man, I could tell you how to have some major fun just below that dam!!!! Tie up some chartruse and pink jig head fly's and chunk um out as far as you can throw em'....Generators have to be on and hold on!!! Skip jack as big as your forearm and one heck of a fight! It's killer fun, especially on spin gear! They'd wear you out on a fly rod! MiniTarpon!

Bob- Good to see your creations are producing. Make sure you let me know when you guys are heading down for your trip. It will give me an extra good excuse to go fishing during the week.

Jeep, thanks bud. That fish was a blast to fight. Came on the first cast after switching flies. Makes you feel smart when that happens, like you actually made a good decision. Actually, it was probably more or less just happening to get my fly right in front of that fish. Either way, it worked out, and started the day off well for me.

Tried out one our beautiful state park lakes here in Mississippi this past weekend. Not nice as the Smokys, but fun nonetheless.

I almost forgot about this month...I didn't take many fish pictures this last trip, but here's the one I have...nice little rainbow from Cosby, with my assistant at the ready:

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s243/ijsouth/IMGP0073.jpg

BTW Troutman - what do you mean by "waiting for a better fish"? That's a nice smallmouth.

Troutman
04-22-2008, 09:39 PM
IJ, These are good smallies. I've caught a lot of them in the 14-18" size range. I am trying for a "trophy" fish of 20" or better on the fly. Its like a 20" brown trout is considered a trophy fish in most streams and a 12" native brookie in the park is thought of as a trophy. That is all I meant. Sure you can go to a hatchery supported stream and find big fish but a "wild" trophy is the challenge. I have been trying for a "trophy" smallie for some time now and springtime is one of best times to find them. They're have been some big fish caught this spring on creek minnows and plastic worms by other local anglers, I want to do it on the fly, a personal challenge thing.

Gotcha...20 inches must be a magic number, like 10lbs for a largemouth.

I got an 8-inch brookie on Cosby on Sunday...and I consider that to be a bit of an achievement for that stream, although I lost a few others that were about that same size.

30th b-day on Ashtabula River in Ohio. We caught chromies all day long. 7wt rods, with mostly a skein fly (sucker spawn pattern) or a Krystal minnow. I have many more pictures if anyones interested.

Caught this guy on 4/20 on the holston. The camera angle does not do it justice but thought I would post it any way. It measured at 14".
Caught on a #14 Adams.

Here is a link to the rest of the steelhead pictures. We caught so many fish that we stopped taking pictures at about 10 or 11 am. This was probably less than half of what I caught that day. There were 6 other guys from the derby city fly fishers and all of us did equally good.

Unfortunately, this is the best I can do for April. Elkmont, April 23. If I say the fly was a #2/0 March Brown, will that make the fish bigger?

You have to use the code link for the picture...when you pull up your album in Photobucket, you should be able to right-click on the link, and then you can paste it directly in your reply on the thread.

[IMG]http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s243/ijsouth/IMGP0062.jpg

In fact, all you have to do is click in the box for [IMG] for that image, and it copies...all you have to do is paste.

Sorry I'm gonna be a day late and dollar short....I won't be posting the results till prob tommorow! I've been in training, driving cars fast and shooting em' up after! It's been good stuff but has pretty much had me run a little ragg-ed!

I'll go ahead and post for the month of may, and I guess I'm out for the month of April...Caught plenty of fish but didn't manage any pictures...Been too busy guiding from behind the oars! I've got plenty of other pictures of my brother in law and father snagging fish! I'll get a picture up hopefully this next week or two for May!

Nice fish to all, and a certain cheers is in order!

Cheers!!!!

I'm going to re-format the way I'm posting the results...UofMontanaAlum, do you have the spreadsheet your using elsewhere that I could duplicate???? I really like that format, it's smart! Hope your travels are all well! Hope you still linger around the board! Even if you don't have it, I wanna try and copy it in some form!

The re-formatting of the results would show the months of the year. Further, it would be marked with an "X" for the months you caught fish and would make things a little easier on the eyes, and cause me less confusion when posting the results!

Fishermansfly,

Shoot me a PM on SEFFF with your email address and I will email you the Excel worksheet for the OFPMC. It's easy to use once its all set up.

My travels were good. I'm super tired. This is the first day I have been home in 3 weeks and my first real "day off".
