View Full Version : Smallmouth Streamer Fly Swap

Anyone interested in a Fly swap of smallie streamers?
With the understanding that these flies can be expensive we could limit it to 5 people and 2 flies each. I would be glad to be the swap meister for this one. I will start it off.

1. Tman's smallie bugger

I'm game, though I've only been turned on to smallies just this past year...

I would be up for it. This would be my first time tying a smallie fly.
I will have to look up fly to tie and get back with you.
Looking forward to the challenge.

I believe I'll try a jointed hellgrammite pattern I've been thinking about putting together, no name yet so will have to tag it later...

Add my name to the list if there is still room. Honestly I will have to look up the name of the streamer I am going to tie. I don't know if it has a name.

We have our 5 tiers! Thanks to everyone for participating. Do you think 3 weeks from today is long enough for a due date or go ahead and make it a full month?
May 7th or 14th?

Each person needs to tie 10 flies of their chosen pattern. Let me know when ready to mail them by sending me an email to: gltroutman at gmail.com

hey Gary.....this will be an interesting tye...you will have to post some pics of the flies. Do you have site you go to for your smallie ties? we do have some great smallie waters and lakes and I would be interested in tying some good smallie flies for my use.....

I've got a lot of deer hair lying round and haven't spun any in a long time so I'll tie a Gerbubble(sp?) Bug and then probably tie a Whitlock Deep Sheep Shad if time- (Just got back from Snowbirding(:>)) If not I've got a very effective leech pattern.

Buckeyetrouter, I will definitely post picts of the flies.
Most of the smallie flies I use are something I created using attributes from other successful patterns. For instance, a John Barr pattern called the "meat whistle", I bend my own hooks to about 60 deg. and use barred zonker strips and palmer the body using rabbit. I like to use lots more weight and plenty of rubber legs. Kind of a jig-n-pig type of pattern.

I do tie clousers and use some store bought patterns everyonce in a while. There are some good books available with lots of good patterns in them.

I look forward to trying out the patterns from this swap on more of these gals!

Count me in for an Olive Strymph. It looks and sounds like a good pattern that will give me a good challenge to tie.
I can't wait to try some of these other flies.

Flying Trout, what did you decide to tie? I will post it on the list.

I do not know the official name of it and I have my own variation. The best I can describe it is a rabbit strip streamer.

One more week on the streamer tie. I've got one email so far.

FlyFishJeep, Found a nice surprise on my desk at work today. Very nice streamers.

I was a little worried that you might not find them. We were leaving to go out of town and I hurried down on Friday morning to find your door locked.
It was nice to know that the pharmacy is open to your office, and I slipped them over there. Let me know when they are all in and I will stop by and pick mine up.

Thanks again for being the flymeister!

Yep, Its a wonder I can find anything on the desk with all this paperwork in the way! I took the day off and took the family camping down at Indian Boundary for the weekend.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am going to inspect my flies from the swap for wear marks. Hopefully Gary hasn't used all the flies before he sends them out.

Great looking fish Gary!
