My gf and i made it out for a hiking (read:fishing) trip on friday in the northern mountains of nc and boy was it hot! Really didn't expect it to be quite that warm but from about 1 until 4 it was pretty toasty. After walking down to the trail about a mile to a waterfall and then walking upstream a mile or two, i tied on an adams with a dropper and had at it. Didn't manage any off of top and didn't see any hitting the top either. As a matter of fact, it didn't seem to me like they were looking up at all but that was probably just me.
Changed flies shortly and ended up with a large stonefly type nymph with a smaller bh r.l. prince nymph behind it. For me, getting the flies down to the fish was the ticket as i immediately began taking fish, although they were very small. That didn't do me any favors as my gf got a good chuckle at the "cute little baby fish" that i caught. I finally started getting into some larger fish, although i wouldn't put too much emphasis on the word larger. They were nice fish, though, and as always the wild ones put up a good fight. They were really going after the prince nymph and even managed to snag a larger fish that appeared to be in the 12" range, but i didn't get a real good look at him before he threw the hook.
It was a good day and lots of fish were brought to hand, although they were pretty small on average which kinda reinforces the notion that i have heard about that stream being hit hard by the drought. Great day though, i'm not complaining, i'll catch them little jewels all day long. Did see a good number of fisherman out as well, probably a good 5 which was a little bit of a surprise.
