I have some questions for you Ultra Wire users out there, I can't see much difference in the diameter of Xsmall and Brassie size. Which one do you all prefer for flies in the size range of 20, 22's. Any info appreciated.

Thanks,

Hans,
You really should use the small size wire after you go below size #16 hooks. The Brassie size will be a little bulky for the fly when you get down into the #20 and smaller flies.

Hugh, thanks, to confuse matters even worse, Wapsi sells a Xsmall and a Small. I guess the Xsmall is for 22's and small for 18, 20? Care to clarify?

Too bad I wasn't able to make the tying session yesterday. Too much holiday stress around the house.

Take care,

Hans,
Wapsi Ultra Wire diameters, or at least what I have for them in my "little black book";)

x-small=.004
small=.006
brassie=.008
med=.013
large=.016

For wire bodies I use brassie up to about sz 14-16, small for flies from about 16 to 20, and x-small for anything below 20. I might go up or down a size or two depending on what effect I am trying to achieve with the wire. Another thing that effects the size is the style of hook. I like to use a little smaller wire on scud or curved hooks. These 2 flies are tied on size 20 hooks with small Ultra wire. The small size wire is just about right for the hook with a straight eye, but it is almost too large for the curved scud hook IMO.

Hans,
I think that you are just about right on with the sizes that you mentioned, and I want to expand just a little bit about those sizes and uses that Flyman has shown you. Look at his flies and you will see that they look real good for the purpose that he has tied them for. I think that they make pretty decent bodies in the small size that he has used. On the other hand, if you chose to rib a fly with wire, in those small sizes,(#20 and smaller), I believe that you would find that the Xsmall size would fit just a little better for that purpose. Each size wire has it's own best purpose and you'll find after tying a few different patterns, where each one fits best. Give Flyman a big hand for two beautiful patterns.

Flyman came through there as always, I don't have words for his ties. Have you seen his Spiders? They are awesome. He ties em' better than some folks in jolly old England.

Thanks Flyman for the size chart. No catalog ever give you the diameters. Now I can see that Brassie is double the thickness compared to Xsmall.

Thanks again.
