Okay, show us what you caught in January. The number of entries dropped off significantly in December, so let's get out there and catch some fish.

Also, below is the link to the rules for the challenge for those who are new to it.

Way to go Charlie! The streak continues! We made a trip to the Elk today and this pretty little rainbow was kind enough to help me continue my streak! Caught on a grey thread midge.

Great idea nvr2L8 getting this done early. I usually forget until right around the end of the month. Anyway, here's mine and while not as pretty as the wild Smokies fish but its a fish...stocker 'bow caught on 1/2/2008 at Byrd Lake on a #14 beadhead Simi Seal Leech...

You guys who live close enough to the mountains to fish it frequently have no idea how lucky you are (OK, you probably have a very good idea, but I had to rub it in just a little).

There's nothing resembling fishing around here until March at the earliest and most likely April.

There's one tailwater about an hour from my house but they open the gates and lower the lake quite a bit from about the first of November through the middle of February. It's such a small body of water it's dangerous to fish when the water is up. The bass and bluegill fishing is pretty much shut down until March.

Keep posting the pictures folks. The rest of us can live vicariously through your exploits.

Don't count on the generation slowing down anytime soon. Current predictions are calling for up to three or four inches of rain over eastern and southern middle Tennessee over the next 2-3 days. If this happens you can forget the Caney for several more weeks at best...:frown: Downright depressing...I think its time for a trip to the Smokies perhaps...

For you or for me? I just went up to Nice Mill, and the water is still roaring but it isn't flowing over the dam anymore. I talked to one guy who said they stocked on the 12th, and surprisingly enough he actually had both a spin and fly rod. I'll be hitting Nice Mill up within the next week or so

The single fish was on1-3-09 on a bend back that I tied myself with the help of Lefty and Bob from a DVD that Santa left in my stocking. The three on the dock were on the same fly in the brush pile the very next day. The pair were the following week.

I was just cought by the three year old boss posting my fish pictures and she would like (demanded ) to have her Rainbow on the computer as well. It was caught by her on her Barbie rod and reel at a trout pond in Bryson last October. Remember to take a kid fishing!!!

Browns have begun moving off the redds on the soho. A few will still hit an egg, but some type of nymph will probably be your best bet right now. Bunch of long skinny browns swimming around for a little while till they get fattened back up.

we got 11" last night and this morning in my area of Ohio, it may be pretty to look at from afar, but it is getting harder and harder to live with as the years go by. My daughter moved to the Smoky Mtn area 3 years ago and now dear ole dad is thinking it's time for him to take the plunge...........

Jeff,

Paula

Paula,
You can have all of it!

Here in Northern Kentucky, we had about 3" of snow, then it turned over to ice which added about 3/4" layer of ice on top of the snow, then it changed back to snow and added another 5" on top of the ice. It's a real mess.

It is beautiful hanging in the trees even though we have lost a few branches off ones in the back yard. A lot of people are still without power especially around Louisville which is about 80 miles southwest of us.

Because most of my job is tech related, I was able to work from home the past two days so I was one of the fortunate ones who did not have to try to drive.

Jeff

PS. I'm coming to Townsend next weekend (2/6 and 2/7) for the fly tying class. No snow until after then please.

I can't believe that I have only been fishing once this month.
Everybody knows that the South Holston has plenty of good browns
Well, it also has a lot of little browns

http://i478.photobucket.com/albums/rr146/MtnMike-photos/IMGP0147.jpg

caught this little guy and several that looked just like him last Friday (1/23) on the Riverbend stretch. Caught on an English Pheasant tail nymph casting to sighted fish.
I was hoping to start the year with something a little bigger, but it didn't work out. I did hook one about 14-16" and was playing him very carefully so as not to loose him, only to let him get me hung up on the bottom. I also missed the hook-set on a really nice fish that was actively feeding. I'm blaming both mistakes on lack of fishing time lately.
Not the best picture, may have had something on the lense. But, it looks like the only one I may get this month. It was a great day to be on the river and I had the opportunity to watch 2 red fox in the woods on the bluff above me. Looking forward to a good year.

David,

Wish I had seen this sooner. The Clinch was still blown out, so I tried the Little River today. No luck, the water was around 40 degrees and nothing was working. This is the first time I have been on the water this year. I watched my streak of 40+ consecutive trips with at least one fish landed come to an end. Oh well, now I can start on my next streak....

I will be in Phoenix this week for a conference, but when I get back we will hit the Caney.
