View Full Version : Taking a pole on Fly Lines

Just want to know what brands and tapers everyone is using. This is more of a pole than an advice thing. I understand line type has alot to do with application, but just wanted to waste some time and get some prespective. So if you got time throw out what you use, you can also throw in line wieght just so we know.

I use SA weight forwards on about every rod that I have. I do like the cortland sylk line for cane rods. I am not a big fan of double tapers. I have friends who live by the new sharkskin lines that are out.

I used to use Scientific Anglers line and have always been happy with them. Bass Bug, XPS, GPX, and Headstart lines.

I have recently switched to Rio lines, mainstream, rio gold, in both WF and DT and find I like them equally as much. It is hard to say which I like better because when you go from and old worn out fly line to a new line, anything with a new coating feels worlds better. I can say that the Rio lines have held up nice over the past year since I have been casting/fishing them.

gm nice to hear from you. With you building the cane rods you might want to give the sylk line a try. It is built on a smaller diameter and flowsa through the guides well. Shoot me a line on how the dickerson is coming along.

I'm all over the place on the lines and a lot of it has to do with where my mind was at when I bought the line.

I have SA Mastery WF
I have Rio Gold
I have Rio Trout
I have an Orvis Wonderline (I think 3rd gen)
and I have one mystery line that was on a reel I bought from a guy on another board. I am pretty sure it is SA Mastery.

I once tried Cabela's Prestige. My experience was save yourself some aggrivation and stick with the SA Rio or Orvis lines. I've never used Cortland but have read enough about them on the boards that I would also give them a try.

I like the new Orvis Easy Mend, 3 -6 WFF and on the deep stuff I fish SA Streamer and Wet tip Express in 200 - 600 Grain. Depthcharge by Orvis is tough also, but they need to change colors on the running line per weight of the line.
