Happy Mardi Gras y'all...we just got back from the city, and a fun day of parading. As usual, we caught Rex, King of Carnival, along St Charles Avenue. It was a beautiful day, starting a bit on the chilly side but warming up quickly into the 60s. I had planned on taking several pictures, but unfortunately it had been a while since I've used my camera, and the memory was almost full - I didn't have time between floats to clear it, so I only got the one picture of Rex on the lead float:

Now, you might ask what all of this has to do with fly fishing, particularly fly fishing in the Smokies. Well, to be honest, there is no DIRECT link; however, it always seems that, no matter when Mardi Gras happens to fall (for example, last year it was 5 February, and next year it will be 16 February), Spring soon follows. I noticed several trees appear to be budding out, and my lawn is next. The warmer weather we'll experience first here in south Louisiana will work its way north, and soon y'all will have that magical first hatch of the season. I wish we could be up there for it, but we'll have to wait 46 days, until Easter.

The theme for Rex this year seemed very appropriate: "Spirits of Spring"...a truly beautiful parade in the sunlight...again, I apologize for the lack of photos.

Is that a great big Pink Barbie he's got in his left hand there? Maybe old Rex is thinking fly fishing, too.

I'm afraid not...it's an illusion - that's a pair of beads from one of the previous parades hanging from the transmission lines for the streetcars.

Here are some more pictures, from the nola.com web site...again, I'm sorry I was so inattentive with my camera:
