It had been a while since I made it to Townsend for some fishing, but I finally got the chance this past weekend. I spent Friday driving over through the park for the NC side. There was still a lot of snow and ice leftover in the high elevations and as a result the water was still pretty cold on Friday despite warm air temps. I fished approximately 3 hours Friday from Metcalf bottoms to Elkmont. I didn't see any bug activity, no risers and I caught no fish. Saturday I was hoping for better results with the warm night temperatures. I decided to start my day on the West Prong on Little River. There was a little bit of bug activity there, but nothing significant. After about 45 minutes I switched to a big helgramite and some split shot and decided to focus my efforts only in the deeper pools. This quickly produced the first fish of the day. I proceeded to move upstream walking past a lot of water I would normally fish only stopping at the deeper spots to make a cast. I did this for about an hour and every deep hole I drifted the helgramite in produced a fish. The largest fish to hand was about 9" and I had another bow come off at my feet that was in the 11" range, probably would have been the biggest bow in the park for me. After catching about 8 bows I decided I could now head to the East Prong and get skunked and it would still be a good day, which is exactly what I did. There were a lot of other fishermen to contend with on the East Prong. I'm sure I was probably fishing behind people in some of my favorite places. I still didn't see much bug activity and no risers. It was a beautiful couple of days to be in the park. It was awesome to be out in the water even though the East Prong humbled me more than it usually does. Here's a few pictures from the weekend.
