View Full Version : How do you use your GPS?

I recently received a GPS that I plan on using for my hunting trips. I was thinking of ways to use it for my back country fishing and was wondering how you guys use yours. I don't mean how to use the unit itself, but more along the lines of special techniques that help your fishing. Thanks.

I have a Garmin device that is probably no longer "cutting edge" by now, but the good news is the most basic functions are the ones I tend use the most.

Whenever I find a good fishing spot i just mark and name the "waypoint" for later reference. Then from any point I can always select "trackback" in case there's a better near-by trail, or if I just want to plot a different route to A, B, or C.

I purchased the specialized maps of the GSMNP then up-load the appropriate quad into my device before I go. That way the device can calculate using trails and not just "airline distance."

It's a neat gadget but depending on how dense the canopy is, satellite reception can be poor at times.

For what it's worth, I have an article in the current issue of American Angler detailing how you can integrate your GPS with Google Earth to make your own fishing maps. I actually use mine as a kind of journal, push-pinning photos of the fish I catch and the important data to the map. This works best in the mountain fisheries, where the fish may not be in the same place all year. It also helps to track the stream levels along with the rest of the data, since those make the biggest difference in whether such-and-such a lie is likely to hold another big trout.

National stream level data is here:

The American Angler article has been digitized in a new beta program they are working on. You can actually download the whole magazine (as well as its sister publications) for free, and also review an online copy here:

If you have feedback, the editors are watching a thread on my site to develop this down the line: http://www.itinerantangler.com/cgi-bin/board/YaBB.pl?num=1237852072

Finally, I have a brief explanation of how that article came together photographically here: http://www.photographybay.com/2009/02/06/always-get-the-window-seat/
