From the WBIR web site:
Strong winds have toppled a number of trees on West Foothills Parkway and Cades Cove Road in the Smokies closing the roads indefinitely.

According to the Nancy Gray with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Foothills Park from Lookrock Tower to the intersection with U.S. 129 is closed while crews work to clear about 25 trees.

Oh yea, I remember having to go up there at 5:45 in the morning having to clear debris from the roadway. Happy Valley and Top of the World Community always got the worst of it. Makes me thankful I work for the city now!

Brett,

I've been meaning to ask if you'll give me a police escort through town when I'm in a hurry to get to the park? Maryville slows me down quite a lot when I'm on my way to Townsend. At the least, will you smooth things over if I get pulled over? "Uh, I want to talk to Officer Romer please..."

Brett,

Wish it had been you that stopped me in the Park last fall going from the Chimney Picnic Area down towards Sugarlands. 53 in a 35 - and the warning that I got was not to forget to pay my $175 fine or a federal marshal would be by my house to pay me a visit. Of course we hadn't hit bottom in the economy yet at that point so I guess I have to consider that.

Moral of the story: forget the bears and snakes and kooks without permits carrying guns - the guy handing out tickets is SCARY dangerous!
