Clinch Report: May 05-07

Well, I fished the lower-end of the Clinch-Trout Bed Monday (61 Bridge Upward). The water was a bit stained from the rain. However, the temperature was optimal for Sulphur hatch and trout activity.

I caught more baby trout than I wanted, but at least they were hitting well. Basically, it was a fish on every other cast. One thing I noticed is they stayed away from all the traditional grey and blue winged flies most people have been boasting about. After examining some of the hatch in the water; I noticed the under body to have an slight orange appearance in the water. So, I went with my favorite color for flies and wore them out on the orange patterns.

I got tired of catching the little ones and I wanted to provoke some of the bigger fish in the deep pools. So, I tied a my weapon for the size fish (Mickey Finn and Dace). I actually lost one of the Mickey Finns due to the fish breaking the tippet. That was a good sized fish...

Well, the river is super muddy now and really moving. I suspect it to be up for a few days.

Not sure how this will affect the sulfur hatch.

Thanks for the report. Yes, I drove by the Clinch this morning. It was very high!!! They are blowing out some serious water.

Thanks for the report. At least somebody is out fishing.

I guess it is a good time for me to be unable to fish with the high water. Hopefully by the time I get back in town next week, they will have slowed down the generation schedule. I am off next Tues , Thurs & Fri, maybe one of those days will be fishable.

Expected releases on Saturday are down to 4,900 CFS from ~9,000 CFS.

you have about 10 days before generation starts on the holston cherokee is rising about 6 in per day with generation on south holston and watagua both coming down

Planning on hitting the Holston tomorrow afternoon. It appears to be the only fishable tailwater tomorrow. Even South Holston is running 1 generator for 24 hours tomorrow.
