View Full Version : Any Interest?: Townsend Fly Tiers (informal) Club

The other day when talking to Bill Hey at LRO he let me in on an idea that he had. He was interested in putting together an informal group that would meet once a month or so (primarily in the Fall/Winter - but could work year round potentially, as well). The group would be a fly tiers get-together where we would each bring our own supplies and tie flies together. The thought would be that we could swap techniques, patterns, materials and stories. It would be open to everyone including folks just getting started. We wouldn't have strict membership, anyone could come whenever they could make it, even if they were in from out of town (or out of state).

A few additional ideas would be that we could each take turns demonstrating how to tie our "secret" patterns, have fly swaps, or even have friendly competitions like blindfolded-woolly-bugger-tying and ugliest-fly-to-catch-a-fish (among others). I ran the idea by Byron and he is willing to let us use the training room at LRO, if we are interested (if we could do it during business hrs - otherwise we might have to make other arrangements on a location).

Let me know on this thread if:

you would be interested in being part of such a group, and if so,
how often you would like to meet (once a month, etc),
if you think it should be just a seasonal thing (Oct-Mar), or year round
what would be your preference for meeting time (ie Saturday or Sunday Mornings or afternoons, or other times), and
any additional ideas to get the most out of the meetings/get-togethers

Sounds interesting, Just need some ideas on how to justify a 4 1/2 hour one way trip. (:>)

Hey Pete,
Great idea, I would be very interested. I think once a month or even twice a month would be great. I think it would be better from oct to march because I am sure many people want to fish in the evening during the spring and summer when there is more daylight. Personally Saturday mornings would work best for me, but I think I could fit something like anytime into my schedule.

I was wondering when something like this would pop-up. My wife does a similar thing with a knitting group. They meet weekly on a Thursday night at a local knitting shop and sit around and gossip for a couple hours.

I would be interested. If it was held every other week, I think it would remain fresh in peoples minds and wouldn't be forgotten. A weeknight would be preferred, I have too many other interests to make a weekend feasible. It would be nice if Paula would let us have it right in the shop while they are open, but I'm not sure when they close. They'd probably get business from everyone one of us each time we met. If not, it would be nice to have it at a local business to support them. If we had it at Deadbeat Pete's, we could drink beer while tying (just like home);)

You may also want to consider having it in Maryville. More options on places to meet and most people have to drive through here to get to Townsend.

I am very interested in this idea. For me the best time would be fall/winter. My weekends are always pretty full but I adapt pretty well.

At this point, you're absolutely right. I haven't ruled anything out, just trying to gather some opinions. Having it at LRO made sense because of the training room with vises already set up. We might be able to get someplace in Maryville, fairly easy, as well (especially if we do it during the week [and I like the beer idea...])

sorry.....that is a left over Texas bit of verbage

Absolutely interestesd...

- monthly would be the best situation for me as driving that would be a bit much for every other week
- also, like the idea of it being a winter event to fill the gap
- Saturdays would work best, but an early Sunday would also be doable

thanks for the thinking of this and bringing it forward, hopefully you can move it forward...

I would be interested. A weeknight would be preferable and if Daycare was offered by Paula it would make it even easier for me to break the news to my wife. "Hey Honey, tonight is my night for fly-tying, but don't worry I'll take the boys with me."
Just a suggestion.

I'd be interested as well. can't say what time would be best due to an ever changing schedule, but I'm sure I'd be able to make it some at least. Maryville would certainly be closer for those of us who live in Knoxville. However, as people swap patterns and ideas, the need to obtain various materials will constantly arise. Being at LRO will give the chance to quickly obtain those materials.

yes i am interested ,i like twice a month ,but i am retired.we fish all year so why not tie all year? I can meet any time any day! I think this is the logical next step of the winter guest program.
