We will be down in the Townsend area at the end of July/beginning in for a couple of days. Since we will be spending only two full days in the area we want to plan for one Day Hike and one partial day of fishing with the rest of time spent driving around. Does anyone have a recommendation for the must do day hike? I have already ordered the National Geographic map from Little River Outfitters.

Spruce Flats Falls is a nice short hike in the Tremont area. There is also
good fishing along the gravel road at Tremont if you like easy access.

We are parking at the New Found Gap parking lot and hiking down to the Chimney Tops parking lot. Park one car at the Chimneys lot and take another to the NFG lot...if you have two cars.

The hike to Charles Bunion from Newfound Gap is pretty nice. Great view at the Bunion if it is a clear day.

Easy hike with plenty of good fishing is the Little River Trail above Elkmont Campground...you can make a loop over to Jakes Creek and come back down and fish over that way also.

charlie's bunion is out the AT from newfound Gap...4 miles out...a big rock outcrop with a drop-off of about 900 feet...no fishing up there, just bear watching...

There is a picture of the Bunion on the gov site, http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/hiking.htm It looks like a good hike, it caught my eye before I posted this thread. I like the elevation gain and it is long enough to give us a nice view. We might do the Abrams Fall hike early on the morning that we leave as well. We are going to separate hiking and fishing into separate days, one hiking, and driving around; and, the other, stream side.

Thanks for the replies, we appreciate them.

Better double check on Abrams before you drive around the loop. It has been closed lately because of bear activity.

it's open...just keep your eyes open
