View Full Version : Tough day on the Hiwassee...

A friend and I took advantage of the low water and cooler temps early Saturday morning on the Hiwassee. We hiked a good distance into the trophy section, seeing only a couple of people who didn't stay very long. I use to come up and fish early like this all the time, doing very good, getting off the water before the mass of tubes and rafts would come down. I don't remember ever seeing the action so slow, or really non-existent. The pulse that we walked in on dropped to a very LOW level. We saw very few insects and most of them were midges. Not any fish rising, none. This is in an area that's my favorite on the whole river. The water temp was 59 at 9:30, so the water seems fine. We caught maybe five fish between us, all around 8 to 10 inches. When I caught hornyheads on dry flys in the usual runs, I knew something was off. I'm sure some folks who are floating are getting different results on high water, but this was very discouraging.

Hey there Mstone.

Man, I don't know what to tell you

We've not been fishing the river with the water off, so I can't really comment much on the low water fishing.

Now the fishing with the river full has been pretty good. I'm nymphing a lot in the early parts of the trip and then switching off to isonychia dries after lunch (3:00pm or so).

Either way, like Grumpy said.....It still beats [insert most any other activity here].

I know esactly what it feels like. The Hiwassee fish are either picky, or hard to find. I've been fishing around Towee Creek, just above Big Bend Parking Area. I have caught a few, but it's still tough. TVA's generation schedules are always getting the better of me.

I figure that the fishing with the water up has to better, It's just that not that long ago, this time of year on low water was still pretty good. Things change, sometimes not for the better, and that's right.......still better than a day at work.
