Hello all,

I am planning on heading to the elk river sunday and was wondering how the fishing has been here lately. What have yall been throwin'? I'm really excited about the trip, so hopefully I will catch a bunch of nice fish. Let me here some of your elk river tales.

I was on the Elk about three weeks ago and did OK. Typical patterns include zebra midges, small bead heads, small wooly buggers, &soft hackles. I use a a parachute adams or big griffith's gnat often times with a midge dropper. They will hit on top. Beetle or ant patterns this time of year should work. You should catch some fish with a decent presentation. Crowds on Sunday can be heavy. They thin out later in the afternoon. Most fish will be in the 9-12" range. Fly fishers don't usually produce large fish on the Elk, but better fish are in the river. It is a small tail water getting a lot of pressure. Keep your offerings small with a fine leader and you should have a good day.

RockyTopWB, I fished the Elk on July 14 and had good success using an olive wooly bugger with a soft brown hackle dropper. Most of the fish that I caught hit the wooly bugger as I stripped across current and the brown hackle on the swing. GOOD LUCK!

I literally lost count of the fish I caught last Saturday.

I caught roughly half on a Hares Ear with a Zebra dropper fished under an indicator and the other half on a Clouser-minnow type fly that I tie that I rip through the current anywhere I know fish are holding. When there are multiple fish holding in a deeper pool they will sometimes ALL come to get it at once which is awesome to watch. With this fly I sometimes catch larger browns as well.

Hope this helps.

Fished the Elk this afternoon. It was very slow. I had tried almost everything in my fly box and had only caught one small rainbow. Nothing seemed to work. Then I put on a #14 scud/sow bug and started catching lots of fish, both rainbows and browns. I caught one nice rainbow, bigger than any I have seen there lately, and I hooked and lost one nice brown.
The afternoon started slow, but finiinshed strong.

I fished the Elk again this morning. No fish over 10", mostly browns and a few rainbows, but plenty of action. Caught fish on olive wooly bugger, gray scud, rust colored scud, and zebra midges.
Bait fishers and spinning rod guys were not doing as well.
Not crowded at all.
A beautiful morning on the Elk!

Here's a nice brown I caught Saturday on the Elk. My biggest trout yet. I'm handling it very carefully so as not to hurt it at all which is why I don't have that great a pic of it. Caught it on a 16 Zebra Midge!
