I decided to slip up into the park and fish today. While driving down the road, every pull-off either a fisherman of a kid chunking rocks into it. It was pretty easy to decide that I needed to head "up high" and fish for the fish that take a little effort to access. I knew most people wouldn't take the effort to get to where I wanted to fish. I was right, and was rewarded for the effort. I got steamside and was fishing by 1:00. I rigged up with my regular olive size 16 caddis fly with a size 18 BHPT dropped off it. By 2:00 I had not had a single look at the caddis fly, but had caught 4-5 on the dropper. At 2:30 I was catching enough fish on the caddis fly, I clipped off the dropper because I was tired of untangling it. Around 3:00 I was getting a rise, or take in every fishy looking pool. This continued until 5:00 when I was starting to get hungry and and was getting sloppy with my wading. I was in a place where getting hurt wasn't an option.

Looks like a good place for a fish to be.

There was also alot of recent hog sign around. You could see some recent rooting and one area in particular smelled like a hog lot. This was the stuff that gets me excited when I'm hunting them. There was even sign in the coyote ****. It was full of hair, almost like they have been eating nothing but pigs.

Good ideal on fishing the out of the way creeks. The brookies seem to be very plump. What more could could a man ask for.

Thanks, I do not know what the temps were. I try not to carry too much stuff with me when I fish. I used to be really good at filling every pocket, clip, box, etc. Then I junked most of it and only carry the necessities. And sometimes, I even forget some of those.

What size caddis and BHPT do you guys normally use?
Also, how far do you drop the BHPT below the caddis?
Last time I tried this, my caddis would sink very quickly.
Thanks for the help in advance.

I normally fish with both being a size 16. This particular trip, the BHPT was a size 18. It just happened to be what was hooked on my fly patch from last trip. Sometimes, I'll go to a size 18 caddis fly, but then I won't fish a dropper with it. I normally fish my dropper around 20 inches below my dry.

You may want some other opinions from mine. I normally won't fish anything but dries in the park. Fishing droppers is new to me, and now that the fish are taking dry flies regularly, I probably won't tie on another until next February.

Arrrgggggghhh! I want to go fishing! Not much time right now but thanks for sharing the pix and the great day in the park. That is a classic stream. I feel sure that you won't tell where it is but I feel that just about any stream is worth the trip .I want to take my grandsons up there for their first trout on a fly rod. What could be better?
