On Easter we went to my parents house in the afternoon. While watching the boys playing outside I heard a turkey gobble a couple times. So, I ran inside and told my dad, changed clothes, and off we went. I had brought my stuff along just in case, but this was my first time turkey hunting so I enlisted my dad as my caller. We made our way down near it, and called for nearly an hour with limited response. We finally decided that it wasn't going to move, and walked up the logging road to see if we could find any activity. Shortly thereafter we walked up on 5 birds, 4 of which spooked when they saw us. Unfortunately for the brave one, he is now going to be dinner. I know that had it not been opening weekend I probably never would have walked in on this bird as closely as I did.

Nice birds guys,

My blind blew down in the storm today. I'll walk down to it in a few minutes and hopefully get it back in shape. I may go early in the morning before work. Going to Kentucky next week to hunt too. There are lots of turkeys this year, more than I can remember.

Byron,

I agree. I have seen more birds this year than ever before. I even saw a couple jakes and a gobbler yesterday evening while on the Clinch. They walked to within probably 30 yards of me, and never spooked.

Travis, was that around the area where you was taking pictures the other day when we floated past in the drift boat? The farm right below where that camper is, is a farm thats been in the family for years. It loaded with birds, we woke up to a flock of 10 right next to our camp site when we was camping there last spring. I'm talking hens 10 yards from our tent. LOL

You are correct sir. They actually walked right past the camper.

I don't recall seeing any on the Clinch in many years, but I have access to some property on the SoHo where we woke up to turkeys in the field every morning. That does make for some very enjoyable camping to go along with the fantastic fishing.

Figure I will revive this old thread.

Got one on opening morning. Talked to him for probably 20 minutes before he came around the corner of the thicket and stepped out into the open field 25 yards away. 21 lbs, 10.5" beard, and 1-1/8" spurs. By far the most fun I have ever had hunting. What a rush it was when he finally responded to my calls and then I kept working him closer until I cold see him. He was accompanied by another jake and some hens. If I wasn't hooked before, I am now.

We're still fairly new at this, but we were speculating that opening weekend was still kind of early in the mating cycle. We thought that was why we were getting sporadic responses to our calling.

Opening morning, we had several globblers in front of us and some live hens yelping behind us. When the globblers flew down shortly after daybreak, they headed directly away from us and the "live" hens. I would have second-guessed our calling except for hens that were trying to "help" us out. Go figure.

The one I got came straight in to the call. Again, go figure. Strange birds.

Sure beats waiting at home for the Caney to become fishable.

Good luck this weekend Buzz. Thanks Travis.

I finally found a little time to make it back out and due some hunting. Me and a buddy headed to his farm in West TN to hunt Wednesday and Thursday. This one fell to a load of 6's Wednesday afternoon.
