JoeFred--I hope visitors to this forum (and others) realize the great potential benefits they can derive form your efforts. I'm not at home right now (I'll be in Bryson City the rest of this month and all of August) but I'm anxious to see what you done on Little River and Deep Creek. You are, IMO, filling an much-needed gap and I hope you will continue your efforts until they eventually cover all the Park watersheds. How I wish I had had all of what you have in the works when I was writing my book on the Park.

For those of you who aren't familiar with what JoeFred is doing, suffice it to say that he takes USGS maps light years ahead from an angler's perspective. The only way I know for you to realize the value of his efforts in full is to examine the finished product. It carries my personal seal of approval. I'm not sure if that's worth doodly-squat, but I feel totally comfortable in saying I recommend the maps.

I can't lower gas prices :frown:, but hopefully this will make a fishing trip to this great watershed a reality for those who have yet to experience it. The price of the Little River System Map (http://www.smokystreams.com/maps/lrprem01.htm) has been significantly reduced while supplies last.

Talked a buddy into buying your map, but they were sold out:frown: at LRO

Just thought you might want to know

Thanks, dp! I will give Daniel at LRO a call this morning. And thank you for your marketing efforts. Have your buddy send me his name and mailing address to sales@saintclairmapping.com (sales@saintclairmapping.com) and I will send him a complimentary map.

PS. Just don't tell Crockett about my giving stuff away. Or is your buddy Crockett? He mentioned being someone's. ;)

Fred I have a buddy that needs a complimentary map too his email is Crockett@... just kidding...

Love your maps and I refer to them quite often. One question when you going to do the Cosby area of the park or a combined Cosby/Big Creek since those two areas have lots of little streams of interest to me lately?

Will do. That's "first class" customer service if I ever saw it:biggrin:

No, it wasn't Crockett. It's a kayaker friend of mine that has a place right near the Hiawassee. He primarily fishes there, and had only been to the Smokies a few times to fish.

While I have only done 2 hikes with Crockett and his lovely wife Amanda, I would love to go fishing or off-trailing with him anytime, and since our interests seem pretty aligned would be happy to claim him as a buddy:rolleyes:

duckypaddler, Daniel found 3 more of the Little River maps, which he is selling at the reduced price also. Regardless, one is on the way to your buddy as promised.

Crockett, as evidenced by my avatar with the virtual grafitti, I am a fan of Cosby. Big Creek is one of the most beautiful streams in the park in my opinion, though I've yet to get to fish it. They are in my radar somewhat, but I was leaning toward doing Cataloochee Creek next and then those afterward perhaps... or Abrams Creek...hmmm... so may prongs, so little tine. Given it's size and relative ease of access, some might think Cosby could suffer too much from foot traffic as a result of this type publicity. I know you like the 'Loochee area as well, so of the two, what say you?

Thanks for asking, Matt. Yes, I plan to have them along with a good many others at a special TroutFest 2011 Expo rate. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Good Lord Fred that is a hard choice to make I love both of those areas a lot. I have only ever fished Big Creek once and didn't do so good but the stream was prettier there than Cosby or Cataloochee IMO. I like big boulder tumbling waters with ledges with lots of deep clear pools which is what Big Creek was like. Seems like Cosby and Cataloochee are kind of the opposite more gently sloping smaller to mid size streams. The Cataloochee maps might sell more since I think it is a more well known destination but the species mapping will be much more difficult due to the rapid changes in the last couple of years with specks migrating downstream as per the other thread going on. Cosby is a little more constant as far as the species there (we know what that one is) and has a lot of creeks which would make it interesting on the mapping side. So there is your non answer my friend with extra butter...

I gotcha.... I think. With the high gas prices and other budget constraints, I think I will do Cosby Creek & Big Creek first.

Thanks

Fred,

I received my LR Map today and it is OUTSTANDING!

I'll pour over the details of the map like it was a well read novel! Fantastic job to all who were involved!

I'll treasure this map as a most important part of my fishing gear.

I might get to come back down for Troutfest at Townsend. Not sure at this time. I hope to meet you if I get to as well as many others.

Thank you so much! My remittance for the invoice is in the mail!

Rick

Rick, thank you for the kind words. Just a few of those involved in this and the other maps include message board members Byron for encouragement and referring me to Brent at Hart Graphics, Kris at Orvis Sevierville, who suggested the LR map format, MadisonBoats for design insights, Jim Casada for his reviews and endorsements, Crockett for suggestions and field testing, Carolina Kudzu for sharing my obsession with stream names/history, and many members who have encouraged us and purchased our products. Also key people are Matt Kulp, NPS fishery bioligist, for sharing data and supporting the objective and to fellow trout fan Rick at Rix Copies (http://www.rixcopies.com/) in Morristown for his excellent printing services.

Rick, thanks again. Enjoy your map and your Smokies.

PS. Speaking of Kris, I just spoke with him and he shared with me about "Fly Fishing 101" a free Orvis seminar coming soon. For more info, contact the store at 865-774-4162.

4/20/2011 Update: "Fly Fishing 101" will be held from 10 til noon, every Wednesday & Saturday from now through September. Kris shared that he especially likes seeing at the school a fly fishing father or mother who has brought their child or... vice versa

JoeFred,

Does the Orvis in Sevierville carry any of your maps. I will be in Sevierville and this would be a quick stop for me. It will be a little while before i get to the Townson Area to stop at Little Rivers shop.

Thanks.

Mac, thanks for asking. Kris spoke to the distributor yesterday and has set an order in motion through Orvis corporate, but that could take a while. I plan to be at the Orvis store this Thursday and I would be happy to leave a couple of free maps there for you. Please e-mail me your travel plans at fredturner@saintclairmapping.com if that interests you.

Either way, enjoy your trip.

Bran, all the current inventory of Little River maps may sell out during Troutfest, but I will put one on hold for you at LRO if that appears to be the case. The others should be available. Hope you have a great trip in June.

JoeFred,

I got home last evening from TN and when the wife picked up our mail at the post office today, I found that the postal service had returned the check I sent to you the day before I left, for the the LR map. I sent the envelope to the Post Office Box on the invoice in Russelville, TN so I don't know what the heck happened.

Is there another address I can send it to, so you will get it.

My bad, whitefeather. The P.O. Box number was correct, but the zip code wasn't. Please accept the map as my gift to you for coming to the Smokies. It's not quite as nice as a toaster, but you didn't have to tour any properties, right. Thank you for your support.

Fred,

Well, I very much appreciate your offer, and the map is a whole lot nicer than any toaster. The map may keep me from becoming "toast" out in the wild someday! LOL!

But.. a deal is a deal, and I am perfectly willing to send you the check to the correct zipcode.

But I will gratefully accept your generosity as a gift if that's your wish. Your call is final!

Bran, I hope you are still going to get to make your trip. When you stop in at LRO, just ask whomever waits on you to give you a Little River map. Please take along a copy of this post as a voucher. I will reimburse Daniel once I hear from you that you receive it.

LRO will likey not have any other maps as we have had to go to strictly all online sales.

Please keep us all posted.

More disappointing economic figures are out. To help some anglers perhaps, the price of the Little River map (http://www.smokystreams.com/maps/lrprem01.htm) has been reduced even further.

Fred I don't know how we would make it without you. Are your maps edible btw? If not might be something to work on before the next set of economic numbers come out...

I need to clear out the large format Little River maps (http://www.smokystreams.com/maps/lrprem01.htm)asap. Now only $3.95 plus a buck for shipping while they last. Crockett, that's not much more than a bottle of ketchup.

Plans are to do replace with larger scale, GPS-compatible, 11x17s of key sections including just above Elkmont, Tremont and Thunderhead Prong/Sam's Creek.
