Fished the Hiawassee for the first time yesterday

Only spent around 2 hours there before heading to the Ocoee for some kayaking. Water temp was 68 degrees :frown:, and I'm sure was the reason for my troutless day.

No trout landed, but I missed a nice one, and I caught the biggest Chub I have ever seen. It was about 9.25 inches. When I hooked him, I thought, finally a trout, but no - just the monster chub. I think the trout that were there were either in deep pools or areated water just trying to survive:eek:

Beautiul fishery that was nice to see without generation (typically kayak this stretch). If we could get some colder weather I could see how it could be an awesome tailwater.

It's been fishing very well up until two weekends ago. I think if you fish the first two hours in the am up towards the powerhouse you should do alright. Other than that you are correct that it will be slow for a while until lake turnover. As for surviving, the trout will be fine unless people are playing them too long. On the other hand you won't get as many strikes at 68 degree water temp anyways, so it kind of cancels itself out I guess. Try the river later in the fall and you will be impressed.

Fish as early in the morning as you can. Daylight is now about 7 AM. I fish it early daytime at least once a week, during the week to avoid warm temps and the Michelin hatch. I fished last week and managed to release 3 or 4 (senior moment) and lost about that many.
