After some internet research I found that this is a northern strain of brookie from the Adirondacks called the "Windfall" strain.

whitefeather,

My biggest in the Smokies was a 10" caught on the Greenbriar around 8 years ago. Haven't caught one over 9" since.

I have a pic somewhere. I caught 3 that were 9 inches. But in 3 years and 50+ Brookie trips that's as big as I can find them:rolleyes:

I would love to see some pics of some Smoky Mountain monster Brookies if anyone will share:biggrin:

Personally, my biggest wild brook was 8 3/4 inches. I know a few streams in NC, outside of the Park, where there are a few 12 inch+ brooks, but I have yet to apprehend one of them. :frown:

I caught one 11.5" about 15 years ago in the Cherokee National Forest in the Tellico area. That is the biggest local one I have caught. We sampled a few in the 12" range in upper East TN back when I worked for TWRA in the 90s. I think 12-13" is the maximum size for TN/NC/GA wild fish these days.

By my count, no trout in the Smokies gets over 8"

You should check out the book Brook Trout by Nick Karas.

I am not that experienced with the freestone brookies; but, I usually catch them in the 9-12" range pretty regularly on the Clinch.

How big do they get? Depends if you have a witness or not.;) The biggest brookie I have caught was about 6 inches. But, I don't get to fish the park as much as I would like. Therefore, I don't have a lot of fish tales to tell.
The record brookie was caught in the Hiwassee- 3 lb., 14 oz. I'm guessing it was a Northern strain, due to the size. There is a mystery as to how the fish got there. Brookies are not found in the river or tributaries.

Are you saying that the fish in youtr pic is 10 inches? If so I would get a new measuring tape. It looks between 7-8 to me. If Flyman sent you a measuring tape, you might want to invest in a new one:biggrin:

I carry a tape and am usually wrong when guessing the fishes size until I actually measure.

And if we are talking about Northern Strain of Brookies, I have caught one that was 15 inches from the Clinch & one 17 inches off the Tuskeegee. Neither fish was much of a thrill compared to the 10 incher I caught in the Smokies:biggrin:
