View Full Version : Fly question?

I know this is a general question. I also know that conditions dictate the choice for the situation. However, my question is this. What size fly do you guys most fish in the park? Both dry and nymph.

14 wet or dry
14's mostly followed by 16's. 12's and 18's only under special conditions. Used to fish smaller sizes but can't see them well enough anymore(on the water or to tie them on).

I used to go with mostly 16's for the dry and 16,18 for the dropper but lately have bumped it up a notch in order to see the fly better for one reason. Now I don't use less than a 14 dry sometimes a 12 even if I am on bigger water. Still go with the tiny droppers though around 16.

16, 18 and sometimes 20 for both dry and nymph. I hardly ever fish something larger that 16.

12-14 nymphs and dries.

About 85% of the time I know fish a size 12 dry fly in the park. While others have mantioned that it is easier to see that's not why I use it. I prefer a size 12 because many of the 1 to 2 inch fish won't be able to get it in there mouth, and many large brookies can't seem to pass it up.
As for a nymph, if used as a dropper, I stick to something light. That may be a size 12 green weenie (no bead head or extra weight), or may be a size 18 prince. Basically any dropper that has less interference with the dry.
If I'm just nymphing then typically a size 14 or better, just depends on how cold the water is and where the fish may be feeding that day.

I usually use pretty small droppers, 16 or 18. I use size 16 dries, but have been using bigger ones lately.
I use size 16 because that's what size hooks and hackle I have when I tie :) Hoping to remedy that soon, when I get a hackle cape.
I do love a yellow stimulator in about a 12 though.

seems as though the 14 is the most common. I usually use 14 also even on droppers but lately had just gave alot of thought to whether or not that was to large. I usually do not catch large numbers of fish and was thinking my fly was to big. I am bad to use a 12 especially on yellow hammers. But you guys have me believing my fly size is correct. I need to focus more on drifts and /or stealth. Just eliminating possible problems for more probable cures.
